San Pedro de Macoris, DR-The Milwaukee Brewers Dominican prospects belted out ten hits including a two-run home run as they cruised to a 6-1 victory over the Junior National Team.
The juniors tied the Toronto Blue Jays Dominican prospects 3-3 earlier in the day, but couldn’t find an answer to stop the Brewers attack.
Clayton Isherwood (Van Anda, BC) started for the JNT and the Brewers wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as a lead-off triple followed by a single gave them a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Isherwood managed four strikeouts during the first two innings and escaped further damage in the bottom of the third when he got out of a bases loaded jam with nobody out on a line-out, infield fly and strikeout.
The Brewers took a 3-0 lead courtesy of a two-run homer that carried over the fence in left centerfield in the fourth and added another run in the fifth on a well executed double steal.
Although Isherwood was tagged for four runs (three earned), he managed an impressive eight strikeouts, while giving up six hits and walking three in five innings of work.
In the seventh, the juniors loaded the bases before a double play and fly-out ended the inning. Jamar Burnette (Toronto, ON) and Owen Spiwak (Mississauga, ON) each singled in the frame which was part of five Canadian hits on the day.
Dylan Brooks (Dorchester, ON) took the mound for the sixth and struck out two before hitting a batter and getting a ground out to end the inning.
Brooks returned for the seventh and gave up a double and single to put the Brewers up 5-0 before recording a key strikeout to end the frame with two runners on.
Brooks’ outing saw him give up one run on two hits and a walk, while fanning three batters.
The lone bright spot offensively came in the eighth when Jordan Schulz (Strasbourg, SK) belted a solo home run over the fence in left field which broke the shutout bid.
Brett Siddall (Windsor, ON) provided his team with an emergency inning out of the bullpen and gave up one run in the ninth.
