Canada Rallies to Defeat Chinese Taipei

Caracas, Venezuela-Canada came back from a 6-2 deficit late in the game to defeat Chinese Taipei 7-6 in Caracas improving their record to 2-0 in Pool A at the Women’s World Cup. The winning run came on a suicide squeeze by Karine Gagne (Granby, QC) who scored Autumn Mills (London, ON) with one out in the bottom of the 7th inning. Vanessa Riopel (Repentigny, QC), who came in relief in the 5th inning, was almost perfect on the mound to pick up the win.

Offensively, Stephanie Savoie (La Pocatiére, QC) was 2 for 3 with a double and Kate Psota (Burlington, ON) went 3 for 3 were the top contributors for Canada. Becky Hartley produced the tying run in the 7th inning scoring Taelor Fredrickson (Saskatoon, SK) from second base who was pinch running for Jennifer Gilroy (Mississauga, ON).

"Despite the one hour rain delay, the girls were able to stay focussed and stayed in the game until the end,” said Field Manager André Lachance (Ottawa, ON). “Our team never quits and it seems like coming from behind is becoming our trademark since the last World Cup."

Martine Nadeau (Québec City, QC) will start for Canada August 14th against Hong Kong. Game time will be 10:30am ET in Caracas.
