National Championships: Busy day one in the books

OTTAWA-Twenty-four games across four different Baseball Canada National Championships were played today as the second week of championship season began earlier today.

All other games are summarized below.

21U

Nova Scotia 10 BC 3

Colby Turple (Kennetcook) hit a three-run home run to highlight a 12-hit Nova Scotia attack as they went on to defeat BC 10-3. Turple was 3-for-4 with three RBI and scored two runs, while teammate Devon Boutilier (Sackville) drove in a pair of runs going 2-for-5. Jake Lonar (Cold Brook) recorded the win on the mound.

Québec 5 Dartmouth 3

Québec scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take a two-run lead and hung on to ruin the hometown party as they defeated Dartmouth 5-3. David Glaude (Québec City) and Abraham Toro (Greenfield Park) each drove in a pair of runs, while Louis-Karl Pedneault (St-Bruno) tossed three scoreless innings of relief to record the win. Dartmouth’s Kaleb Beaver (Dartmouth) hit a three-run homer in the second to account for all of his team’s runs.

13U National Western

Regina (SK2) 18 Pembina Hills (MB1) 5

Regina took advantage of eight walks and banged-out 12 hits to defeat Pembina Hills 18-5. Dylan Edmands (Regina) scored five runs for his team and went 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBI. Mathew Turta (Regina) tossed two scoreless innings of relief and scored three runs. Pembina Hills received a 2-for-3 performance with three RBI from Joey Moffatt (Portage).

Cloverdale (BC1) 15 Calgary (AB2) 10

Cloverdale scored runs in all seven offensive innings and held off a late Calgary surge en route to a 15-10 win. Liam Knight (Cloverdale) collected four hits and scored two runs, while his teammate Nicholas Bleha (Cloverdale) went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Calgary’s Devyn Rosher (Calgary) hit a three-run homer in the sixth and ended the game with four RBI.

Saskatoon (SK1) 7 South Central (Host) 5

Reed Boles’ (Saskatoon) three-run homer in the fifth proved to be the difference as Saskatoon came from behind to defeat host South Central 7-5. Adam Knaus (Saskatoon) tossed two and one-third innings of relief and struck out three, while Chavez Constant (Saskatoon) tossed one scoreless inning to record the save. Kacey Lebleu (Winnipeg) had a triple and two RBI for South Central.

North Winnipeg (MB2) 7 Okotoks (AB1) 5

Three North Winnipeg pitchers were able to quiet the Okotoks attack for four innings as they earned a 7-5 win over their counterparts from Alberta. Tyler Smith (St. Andrews) ended up getting credited with the win after he tossed one and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief. Matthew Towle (Winnipeg) scored two runs and had two hits including a double. Okotoks were led offensively by Jack Howard (Calgary) who went 2-for-3 and scored one run.

18U

Alberta 5 Ontario 4 (8 innings)

A 1-1 tie was quickly erased with the extra-innings rule in effect as Alberta countered three Ontario runs in the top half of the inning with four in the bottom half to earn a 5-4 victory. Jake Fischer’s (St. Albert) double in the eight scored the tying and winning runs to give Alberta the walk-off win. Jackson Wark (St. Albert) provided his team with seven solid innings on the mound striking out five while giving up only one run on five hits and a walk. Ontario received a string performance on the mound from Noah Smith (Ilderton) who tossed four innings.

BC 9 PEI 1

Brennan Hegel (Kamloops) was a triple away from the cycle going 4-for-4 as BC pounded-out 13 hits and limited PEI to just two in rolling to a 9-1 win. Hegel homered and drove in three runs, while Evan Bannister (Port Coquitlam) went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Daniel Rogers (Chilliwack) earned the win tossing three and one-third innings without giving up an earned run.

New Brunswick 16 Newfoundland & Labrador 5

Blake Gallagher (Waasis) went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI to lead New Brunswick to a 16-5 win over Newfoundland and Labrador. New Brunswick scored seven runs in the fourth and added another five in the sixth to end the game after six innings via the mercy rule. Zach Gosse (Miramichi) collected two hits, scored two runs and drove in two runs, while three New Brunswick hitters limited Newfoundland and Labrador to just three hits.

Québec 8 Saskatchewan 7

Charles Leblanc (Laval) hit a three-run homer and later added a three-run double to account for six RBI as Québec edged Saskatchewan 8-7. Leblanc’s homer came in the first inning while the bases clearing double came in the fourth. Benjamin Pelletier (Varennes) added a two-run double to round out the Québec scoring. Saskatchewan received a 2-for-4 performance with two RBI from Devin Gavigan-Hosaluk (Saskatoon), while starter Rhett Feser (Unity) struck out nine batters.

Senior Women

Ontario 17 Nova Scotia 1

Ontario made a statement that they intend on keeping their gold medal as they scored nine runs in the second and added eight more in the third inning to cruise to a 17-1 win over Nova Scotia. Nicole Garner (Burlington) went 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI, while Ashley Stephenson (Oakville) and Melissa DiFranco (Burlington) drove in three runs apiece. Hannah Martenson (Ottawa) and Brinley Mclaren (Brantford) combined to limit Nova Scotia to five hits, while Ontario had 11.

Québec 7 Ontario (2) 2

Québec put up four runs in the third and got solid outings on the mound from both Vanessa Riopel (Repentigny) and Isabella Denis (Candiac) to earn a 7-2 win over Ontario (2). Émilie Laliberté (Granby) went 2-for-2 with one RBI and one runs scored.

BC 14 Québec (2) 4

BC scored eight runs combined in the last three innings to pull away from Québec (2) and earn a 14-4 mercy rule win. Daniella Matteucci (Fruitvale) was the star of the game going 5-for-5 with a double, triple, three runs scored and five RBI. Amanda Asay (Prince George) went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Niki Boyd (Surrey) had a triple and scored four runs. Geneviève Beauchamp (St-Jerome) had two hits for Québec (2).
