National Championships: Day one recap

OTTAWA- It was a busy day a four different locations across the country as four different Baseball Canada National Championships got through day one of games today with another full schedule of games slated for tomorrow.

Here’s a look at the late action from day one with all events scheduled to run through Sunday.

Senior Men

New Brunswick 14 Alberta 2

Mike Washburn (Fredericton) and Jody Peterson (Fredericton) hit back-to-back homers in the fourth and Jake Waugh (Douglas) pitched five solid innings on the mound as New Brunswick defeated Alberta 14-2 in game that ended after five innings due to the mercy rule. Washburn’s homer was a three-run shot, while Peterson followed with a solo blast for New Brunswick who jumped out to a seven run lead with seven runs in the third inning. Washburn drove in five runs going 3-for-3 at the plate and Peterson drove in three.

Nova Scotia 11 Newfoundland & Labrador 3

Nova Scotia led by seven runs after four and put things in cruise control from that point on in picking up their second win of the day with an 11-3 victory over Newfoundland and Labrador. Matt Denney’s (Florence) third inning home run highlighted a 12 hit Nova Scotia attack that included a 3-for-4 game from Chris Farrow (Sydney) who doubled, scored two runs and drove in one run. Paul Doucette (Glace Bay) was solid on the mound for five innings as he picked up the win allowing one run, scattering five hits and two walks, while he struck out two. Daniel McCarthy (Corner Brook) hit a two-run homer for Newfoundland and Labrador.

Saskatchewan 8 St. John’s 3

Steven Latos (Lloydminster) struck out eight batters over six and two-thirds innings, while Jake Hersikorn (Saskatoon) and JP Willner (Regina) each hit home runs as Saskatchewan ruined the hometown party beating St. John’s 8-3. St. John’s opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the fourth taking advantage of two Saskatchewan errors before Hersikorn hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning to bring his team within one who then tied it up in the fifth. In the sixth, Saskatchewan scored five runs with two coming in on a Jace Muggli (Saskatoon) single, while Willner later added a two-run homer.

Nova Scotia 19 Newfoundland & Labrador 4

Nova Scotia had 13 hits and took advantage of eight Newfoundland and Labrador errors to earn a convincing 19-4 win. Joey Hagen (Dartmouth) went 3-for-5 with three RBI and scored three runs, while Connor Snarr (Upper Tantallon) tripled as part of a 2-for-2 game at the plate to go along with two RBI. Sean-Ross Hubley (Sheet Harbour) struck out eight over four and two-thirds innings of work to get the win.

Saskatchewan 19 Manitoba 7

Jared Binsfeld (Saskatoon) drove in four runs, while Jaden Shewchuck (Saskatoon) drove in three as Saskatchewan scored in all five of their offensive innings en route to a 19-7 win over Manitoba. Binsfeld and Shewchuk both tripled, while Chace Davidson (Saskatoon) was effective over four innings to get the win. Trey Fortin (Winnipeg) tripled and went 2-for-3 with one RBI for Manitoba.

New Brunswick 6 PEI 4

New Brunswick held off a late PEI charge and received a home run from Adam Estey (Fredericton) in recording a 6-4 win. Estey went 2-for-3 and drove in three, while Conner Huckins (Grand Manan) and Sam Beaulieu (Fredericton) combined on six innings with neither giving up an earned run as Huckins fanned two, and Beaulieu struck out four. Brett Platts (Albany) doubled and drove in a run for PEI.

Vaughan 4 Québec 3

Host Vaughan took the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth and held on for a 4-3 win over Québec to send the hometown crowd home happy. Vaughn Lucyk’s (Burlington) RBI groundout in the sixth scored the eventual game winning run and Phil Blondin (Burlington) held Québec to one run in the bottom of the sixth before pitching a scoreless seventh to get the win. Thomas Drouin (Québec City) doubled and drove in a run for Québec.

BC 8 Alberta 3

Sami Shoemaker (White Rock) had nine strikeouts over three and two-thirds innings of work and Dawson Gray (White Rock) went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI to lead BC to an 8-3 win over Alberta. Shoemaker allowed only one hit and walked one before being lifter from the game with two out in the fourth. Wesley Moore (Surrey) doubled and had one RBI in the win.

16U Girls Invitational

Nova Scotia 16 Saskatchewan 0

Nova Scotia’s pitchers were near perfect this afternoon, giving up only 2 hits in 4 innings of play in a 16 to 0 win over Saskatchewan. During this one-sided affair, centerfielder Maria Roy (Hammonds Plains) was perfect at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a three-bagger in the 1st.

Ontario 16 Quebec (2) 4

Ontario won in convincing fashion for the second time on opening day, this time against home province Quebec 2. Lindsay Wilcox (Waterdown) and Taylor Delaney (Mississauga) both registered three hits, backed up by a solid performance on the mound from Stephanie Ellis (Brantford) who gave up 4 hits in four innings, striking out 3 in the process.

Québec 9 Manitoba 8

Quebec and Manitoba gave us the closest game of day 1 at the 16U Championships. Both teams got hot in the fourth inning, with Quebec scoring 5 runs and Manitoba 6. Manitoba took an 8-6 lead to the seventh inning, before Quebec quickly made it 9-8 thanks to back-to-back doubles from Erica Ahad (Dollard-des-Ormeaux) and Arianne Levesque (L’Assomption).

13U

Ontario 6 British Columbia 4

Despite scoring 3 runs in the last two innings, British Columbia could not complete the late comeback against Ontario. TJ Schofield-Sam (Brampton) was solid on the mound for Ontario, limiting British-Columbia to two hits in four innings, while Stanley Dean (Harrow), Luc Warnock (McGregor), and Nick Fraser (Burlington) took care of the rest on the mound. Schofield-Sam was just as good with the bat, helping his own cause by going 3 for 4 with 2 doubles.

Quebec 2 16 Atlantic 3

Quebec 2 was solid this afternoon accumulating an impressive 16 hits throughout the game - good for a 16 to 3 win over the Atlantic. Jimmy Genereux (Lanaudière) and Victor Bergeron (Lanaudière) led Quebec’s attack with 4 and 3 hits each respectively, combining for a total of 5 runs batted in. On the mound, Emilien Pitre (Landaudière) was strong over 3 innings of work, shutting out the Atlantic and surrendering only 3 hits to his opponents.          

London 10 Québec 6

The last game of opening day at the 13U Nationals gave the fans in attendance a real nail biter. The score remained 4-3 in favor of Quebec until they added to their lead with a 2 run sixth inning thanks to a single from Justin Bellavance (Quebec) and a double from Anthony Gilbert (Quebec). That’s the wakeup call London needed to spark an impressive comeback, highlighted by a seven run bottom of the sixth that saw every player go up to bat at least once. Keegan Pulford-Thorpe (Newmarket) Josh Hudvagner (Cottam) both recorded two hits en route to victory.
