OTTAWA- Four different Baseball Canada National Championships got started this morning with games in St. John’s and Mount Pearl, NL (Senior Men), Saguenay, QC (16U Girls), Vaughan, ON (15U Boys) and London, ON (13U).
Here’s a look at the early action with a full report to come later this evening.
Senior Men
Ontario 2 New Brunswick 0
Mitch Kramer (Amherstburg) spun a three-hit shutout and Ontario took advantage of a pair of New Brunswick errors in the second innings to score two runs and escape with a 2-0 win. Kramer allowed only three hits and struck out three, while two New Brunswick errors with two out in the bottom of the second allowed both Ontario runs to score. Curtis Lambkin (Lakeshore) went 3-for-3 for Ontario, while New Brunswick’s Dave Barr (Fredericton) went 2-for-3 with a double.
Nova Scotia 7 Manitoba 1
Matt McDonald (Halifax) tosses a complete-game allowing only one run on three hits and struck out seven to lead Nova Scotia to a 7-1 win over Manitoba. Nova Scotia jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second and added a pair of runs in the fifth before the teams traded runs in the seventh. Ken Long (Sydney) and Jeff MacKinnon (Glace Bay) drove in runs for Nova Scotia, while Matt Denney (Florence) and Duncan MacDougall (Sydney) each collected two hits.
BC 7 Ontario (2) 3
A seven run sixth inning highlighted by home runs from Robert Wagner (Port Moody) and Joseph Germaine (Aldergrove) propelled BC to a 7-3 win over Ontario (2). Wagner led off the inning with a solo blast, while Germaine’s was a two-run shot after Robert Foerster (Aldergrove) doubled. Shane Kraemer (Chilliwack) was solid over five and a third innings of work on the mound fanning eight batters. Ontario’s Sean Bignall (Mississauga) doubled in a pair of runs as Ontario put up three in the bottom of the sixth.
15U
PEI 11 Manitoba 10 (8 innings)
In a wild one, PEI scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth to coming all the way back from a five-run hole to walk-off with an 11-10 win over Manitoba. With the score deadlocked at 5-5, Manitoba looked to take control, of the game with five runs in the top of the eighth before PEI came back to win. Brandon Condon (Summerside) had a triple and two RBI for PEI, while teammate Ethan Francis (Miscouche) tossed four innings and gave up just one run and recorded seven strikeouts. For Manitoba, Victor Cerny (Winnipeg) went 2-for-3 with a triple, scored three runs and drove in one.
Saskatchewan 8 Newfoundland & Labrador 6
Saskatchewan scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-6 lead over Newfoundland and Labrador and Kaito Farquharson (Yorkton) pitched two scoreless innings with four strikeouts to preserve the win. Jared Binsfeld (Saskatoon) tripled and drove in a run for Saskatchewan, while Evan Thomas (Saskatoon) went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Newfoundland and Labrador received two hits and one RBI each from Daniel Hogarth (Conception Bay South) and Joel Abbott (Portugal Cove-St. Phillips).
New Brunswick 6 Nova Scotia 4
New Brunswick scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to overcome a two-run deficit and hung on to beat Nova Scotia 6-4. Brett Mercier (Moncton) tossed three scoreless innings with four strikeouts and also went 2-for-2 at the plate and scored a run. Matt Sabean (Bridgewater) went 2-for-4 with a double and scored a run for Nova Scotia.
Ontario 9 BC 0
Ontario scored six runs in the second inning and never looked back as they shutout BC 9-0. Cooper Davis (Mississauga) went 2-for-3 including a RBI single in the second inning and Harley Gollert (Toronto) struck out eight over three and one-third innings of shutout baseball.
Alberta 8 Québec 0
Ben Erwin (Spruce Grove) tossed five and two-thirds shutout innings and struck out eight as Alberta blanked Québec 8-0. Alberta led 3-0 until the seventh when they added five more runs all coming with two out to go up by eight. Both Jacob Bouzide (Calgary) and Logan Cameron (Stony Plain) had two hits and drove in a run. Daniel Donnelly (Okotoks) pitched one and a third innings of relief and went 1-for-1 with one RBI for Alberta.
16U Girls Invitational
Ontario 17 Nova Scotia 2
Ontario exploded for 13 runs in the third inning to erase any hope of a Nova Scotia comeback as it took them only four innings to earn a 17-2 win. Jenna Hillman (Tecumseh) drove in six runs hitting a double and a triple to lead the Ontario offence, while Jessica Jeffery (Leamington) tripled, scored three runs and drove in two.
Alberta 15 BC 8
Alberta pounded-out 18 hits to score 15 runs as they defeated BC 15-8 in a game that featured 29 hits combined between both teams. Meagan Cameron (Rimbey) went 4-for-5, scored two runs and drove in three, while Carrie Jesperson (Spruce Grove) and Kennedy Roblin (Sherwood Park) contributed three hits apiece. Kelsey Lalor (Red Deer) also drove in three runs with a 2-for-5 game at the plate. For BC, Miki Sara (Kelowna) and Stephanie Russo (Kelowna) each had two hits including a double to go along with one RBI.
In other action Newfoundland & Labrador defeated Saskatchewan 14-4. Game details are unavailable at this time.

Alberta 10 Saskatchewan 2
Alberta scored runs in all but one inning and held Saskatchewan to two runs to come away with a 10-2 victory. Liam Froment (St. Albert) pitched four scoreless innings and struck out four, while contributing a pair of hits and one run at the plate. Michael Brisson (St. Albert) went 3-for-4 with one RBI for Alberta, while Ryan Marples (St. Albert) had two RBI.
