OTTAWA – Jack Leger went the distance, tossing seven innings and allowing just one earned run, six hits and a walk to go along with two strikeouts to lead his Port City (NB) Pirates squad to a 7-2 victory over the eastern (PEI) Express en route to capturing the title at the 13U National Atlantic Championships in St. John’s.
Port City received a three-hit performance from Evan Warr who scored two runs and knocked in one run while William Henry finished with a pair of hits including a double and two RBI.
Port City had bested provincial rivals, Fredericton, 8-6, earlier in the day in a semifinal contest to advance to the championship game while the Eastern Express did the same to fellow-PEI squad, Summerside, by a score of 6-4 in the other semi.
In bronze medal action, Summerside ensured that two island squads would medal on championship Sunday by coming away with an 18-5 win over Fredericton.
Summerisde’s Ben Connolly had four hits on the game including three doubles and four RBIs while also pitching 2.1 scoreless innings on the mound.
