OTTAWA- The 13U National Atlantic Championships resumed Friday and Saturday in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island with a total of twelve exciting matchups. Here are the results going into the final day of competition Sunday where the Gold and Bronze medal matchups are scheduled to take place.
FRIDAY GAMES
Summerside (PEI) 10 Kentville (NS3) 0
Summerside needed only 5 innings to come out on top in this one-sided affair. Jake MacLaren and Dylan Thomas shared duties on the mound, and did so in stunning fashion as they limited Kentville to only two hits. Offensively, Nicolas Havenga and Bennet MacArthur registered two hits each and combined for 5 RBI.
Fredericton (NB1) 8 Halifax (NS2) 6
With the score tied heading into the final two innings, Halifax jumped to a two run lead on an error by the third baseman with the bases loaded. It wouldn’t take long for Fredericton to answer during their turn at bat in the sixth, putting four runs on the boards thanks to a timely two RBI single by Sam McKinney. In the victory, Alex Vanderborre had two hits and also added one RBI.
Darmouth (NS1) 10 KV (NB2) 9
Despite a late rally in the seventh inning that saw KV score three runs, the team from New Brunswick was unable to complete the comeback in this exciting roller coaster matchup. Short stop Cameron Brown led the way for Dartmouth with a three-hit performance that included a home run and a double, a performance good for 3 RBI.
Charlottetown (Host) 8 St John’s (NL1) 7
Host team Charlottetown came alive at the right time, using a two run seventh inning to beat St. John’s by the final score of 8-7. Jordan Spence had three hits including a double, while Matt Jabour’s two hits (single, double) knocked in three runs.
Kentville (NS3) 11 Halifax (NS2) 1
Kentville had early control in this one, and never looked back after putting on the board in the opening inning. Center fielder Ethan MacDougall had two hits, including a triple good for 2 RBI, while pitcher Micah McDowell helped his own cause with three hits. McDowell was just as solid on the mound, allowing only 4 hits and striking out six in six innings of work.
Summerside (PE1) 11 Frederiction (NB1) 9
Both teams put on a good show offensively, combining for 23 hits. Despite scoring an impressive 8 runs in the last two innings, Fredericton could not complete the comeback. After reaching base safely twice earlier in the day, Bennet MacArthur was back at it with 3 hits that included his second Home run of the day. Jake MacLaren knocked in two runs thanks to a hot bat that saw him hit three doubles. Note that despite the lost, Jayden MacIntyre had a solid performance with two singles and 4 RBI.
Darmouth (NS1) 8 St. John’s (NL1) 4
Catcher Brody Boudreau had a timely double in the bottom of the fourth that scored teammates Nathan Boutiler and Benjamin Roode en route to the 8-4 win for Darmouth. In the lost, center fielder Jacob Reid and left fielder Ryan Costello each had two hits for St. John’s.
Charlottetown (Host) 6 KV (NB2) 2
Host Charlottetown closed out day two of competition with a victory, improving their record to 2-1 heading into the weekend. Third base Eric Anderson had two hits including a double, while Noah Duckworth and Braden Donnelly joined efforts on the mound, allowing a combined 4 hits and striking out 4 in the process.
SATURDAY GAMES
Fredericton (NB1) 18 Darmouth (NS1) 10
In the first semi-final game of the day, Fredericton came out hungry with six runs in the first inning and showed no signs of slowing down from there. Shortstop Jayden MacIntyre had an impressive day, going 5 for 5 and bringing his tournament average up to an astonishing .727. Cameron Brown also had a good day the plate despite his team losing, hitting his second home run of the tournament and recording 3 RBI in the process. Fredericton will play for the gold medal game tomorrow at 2:00 PM, while Darmouth will compete in the bronze medal matchup starting at 10:00AM at City Diamond.
Summerside (PE1) 17 Charlottetown (Host) 16
Charlottetown scored an incredible 9 runs in the first inning, putting them in a great spot early on to punch their ticket to the grand finale. That’s when things got really interesting, and Summerside started climbing back into this one, first with 3 runs in the first followed by 7 in the second. Summerside would finally complete the comeback in a game where both teams combined for 29 hits and 33 runs. Pitcher Bennet MacArthur had 3 hits including a double good for two RBI. Blake MacKinnon also had three hits, including a Home Run, good for 2 RBI. Summerside will play for the gold medal tomorrow at 2:00PM, while Charlottetown will compete for bronze at 10:00 AM at City Diamond.
In placement games, Kentville won the fifth place game over KV (NB2) 8-7 and Halifax won the seventh place game against St. John’s 15-14.
