OTTAWA – Vince Perkins (Victoria, BC) and Matt Kniginyzky (Oakville, ON) have both been named to Canada’s 2009 Baseball World Cup roster, completing the 24-man roster for the tournament which begins for Canada on September 9th in Stockholm, Sweden.
Kniginyzky was named after Philippe Valiquette (Montreal, QC) who was removed from the roster due to injury. The 26-year-old right handed pitcher, who is a prospect in the Kansas City Royals organization, went 5-10 with a 5.48 ERA in 26 games (24 starts), throwing 134 2/3 innings for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals of the Double-A Texas League this season.
Perkins, who last played for Canada at the 2009 World Baseball Classic, fills out the last roster spot for Team Canada and will join the team in Cary, North Carolina for their exhibition series against the United States prior to the World Cup.
Perkins went a combined 7-2 in 53 games between Double-A and Triple-A this season in the Chicago Cubs system. He has recorded five saves with a 3.01 ERA in 86 1/3 innings this season.
World Cup Roster
