World Children’s Baseball Fair cancelled due to Covid-19

OTTAWA – The World Children’s Baseball Fair, scheduled for August 14-21, 2020 in Narita, Japan, has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The cancellation was communicated to Baseball Canada by event organizers over the weekend.

The WCBF was to celebrate its 30th year in 2020 and was doing so by hosting girls-only baseball clinics with attendees representing 11 different countries.

“We have been preparing for this first ever tried, “Baseball clinics with and only girls from all over the world,” but due to the unfortunate progression of COVID-19 infections taking place globally, we must put our participants and staffs’ health first, therefore, we came to a conclusion that holding a fair this year would be extremely difficult,” said Japanese home run king at WCBF chairman Sadaharu Oh in a statement.

“We would like to thank each and every one of you from the bottom of our hearts for having made every effort to make the fair happen.”

In February, Baseball Canada held a contest to select five lucky winners to attend the WCBF and received dozens of excellent video submissions from female baseball players throughout Canada.

Camden Suchan (Saskatchewan), Sophia Audet (Ontario), Julia Theroux-Duguay (Québec), Iris Long (Nova Scotia), Brynn Hawes (British Columbia) were selected to attend by Baseball Canada’s Girls Committee along with chaperone Julie Gosselin (Québec).

Baseball Canada would like to congratulate the aforementioned and share in the disappointment of this unfortunate circumstance.
