Ottawa, Ontario – Heading into the weekend, host Trois-Riviéres leads the 18U tournament with a record of 3-0, and is in a strong position to advance to the medal rounds on Sunday. Other teams looking to advance include Saskatchewan and New Brunswick
Halfway through the 21U tournament, Ontario and Québec both remain undefeated, leading both of their pools. Both teams will look to clinch a playoff birth into Sunday’s medal round follow the results of Saturday.
The following is a brief recap of today’s afternoon and evening match ups.
18U Championship
New Brunswick 10 Nova Scotia 2
The score does not reflect the result of the game, as the New Brunswick bats exploded for nine runs in the eighth inning to get past Nova Scotia. Blake Gallagher (Waasis, NB) and Nick Leggatt (Chatham, NB) combined to drive in six runs and each hit a home run in the game. Michael Boylen (New Minas, NS) scored both runs for Nova Scotia.
Ontario 8 BC 5
Ontario quickly erased a three run deficit with five runs in the bottom of the third inning, and never looked back as they hung on to defeat British Columbia. Vincent Caschera (Sarnia, ON) had two doubles and two RBI in the win while Byron Prasad (Vancouver, BC) drove in two runs in his team’s losing effort.
Manitoba 10 Newfoundland and Labrador 0
It took only six innings for Manitoba to quickly dispose of Newfoundland and Labrador 10-0. Drake Pilat (Winnipeg, MB) scored twice while also adding a home run and two RBI, and Jake Babinksy went all six innings allowing only three hits to pick up the win.
Trois-Riviéres 12 Québec 8
In the battle of Québec teams, host Trois-Riviéres came out on top and remains undefeated following a 12-8 victory. Down 8-6, the hosts would score six unanswered runs to snatch the victory away from their rivals. Raphaël Gladu picked up another three RBI to bump his total up to seven while Québec’s Mathieu Girard (Varennes, QC) had three hits in the losing cause.
Saskatchewan 5 New Brunswick 2
Bryce Crosbie (Moose Jaw, SK) would go a perfect 4-4 at the plate to guide his team offensively as they defeat New Brunswick 5-2. Chase Nistor (Regina, SK) would go five innings on the mound to pick up the win while striking out five in the process. Caleb Little (Fredericton, NB) took the loss for his squad.
Nova Scotia 1 Prince Edward Island 0
Luke Muise (Yarmouth, NS) wound up going the distance in a close 1-0 victory over Prince Edward Island. Muise gave up only two hits through those sevens innings and struck out a total of seven batters. PEI’s Brodie Koughan (Springvale, PE) went six innings to pick up the tough loss.
21U Championship
Ontario 10 Prince Edward Island 3
Eric Cunningham (Lasalle, ON) and Chris Horwood (Tecumseh, ON) each scored twice to pace the offense in a convincing win over Prince Edward Island. All ten runs would come in a two-inning span late in the game to erase a 3-0 hole midway through the game.
Nova Scotia 12 New Brunswick 2
Nova Scotia soared out two an 8-2 lead heading into the third inning en route to the convincing win over New Brunswick. Codey Schrider’s (Dartmouth, NS) grand slam in the second inning helped his team quickly pull away and never look back. Adam Hendrie (Dartmouth, NS) scored twice and added two RBI of his own.
Québec 7 Dartmouth 1
The hosts suffered their first loss, falling to Québec 7-1. Louis-Karl Pedneault (St-Bruno, QC) was dominant on the mound, going all seven inning striking out eight batters and walking only one. Simon Landry (Québec City, QC) would lead the way offensively with two hits and two RBI.
British Columbia 12 Manitoba 1
British Columbia would use a balanced offense to easily dispose of Manitoba 12-1. Five different players would go on to have at least two hits, including Corbin Henderson (Coquitlam, BC) who had two RBI and scored three runs himself. Carter Sherban also contributed with three hits and two RBI to help his team.
In Dartmouth, action kicks off at 9:00a.m. ADT with Saskatchewan taking on Ontario, while over in Trois-Riviéres games do not begin until 11:00a.m. ET.
