2009 National Championships: delays in Vaughan, Toronto; clear skies in Dartmouth, Red Deer

OTTAWA – More rain following tornado hits in Vaughan, Ontario have caused some more delays for the Bantam Boys Championship. In nearby Toronto, the Bantam Girls Championship got underway, but seems to be experiencing some delays due to weather as well. As for the Senior Men’s championship in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; and the Peewee Western Championship in Red Deer, Alberta, it is smooth sailing.

In Vaughan, They were able to complete a pair of games originally scheduled for yesterday this morning before more rainfall hit the area, causing some more delays. One of the games completed was a 31-1 lopsided victory by Ontario over Newfoundland. The host team from Vaughan also earned a mercy win over Prince Edward Island by a score of 11-0.

In Toronto, Ella Matteucci (Fruitval, BC) and Sydney Elrick (Surrey, BC) combined to throw a no hitter as British Columbia would go on to mercy rule 10-0 win over Nova Scotia. Matteucci threw four innings, allowing only a pair of walks while striking out eight. Elrick threw a perfect fifth inning before her teammates would score three more runs in the bottom of the frame to clinch the mercy win.

Elsewhere, Saskatchewan took a 7-0 lead in the top of the first over Québec, but the team from la belle province was resilient and scored one in the bottom of the first, five in the second and two in each of the fourth and fifth innings to earn the comeback win by a score of 10-9. Sabrina Beauvais (Montreal, QC) went 2-for-2 with a double, triple and three RBI for Québec in the win.

After those two games, the skies opened up which has caused some delays, but action is expected to resume this afternoon.

At the Senior Men’s Championship in Dartmouth, a four run second inning was all that New Brunswick (Chatham) needed as they would go on to beat Manitoba 4-1. Tyson Waye (Miramichi, NB) hit a two-run single in the inning and was 2-for-3 in the game with a run scored.

In other action, Ontario broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth by scoring five runs and went on to win by a score of 8-3 over Dartmouth. Anthony Dufour (LaSalle, ON) went 4-for-5 and Rob Mancini (Windsor, ON) went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Kenneth Rogers (Whitby, ON) drove in three runs, going 1-for-3.

Dane Little (Windsor, ON) threw a complete game to earn the win. He allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits and three walks. He would also strikeout nine Dartmouth hitters.

Also, Newfoundland improved their record to 2-1 with an 8-5 victory over New Brunswick (Fredericton) and take possession of first place in Pool A for the time being.

Finally, in Red Deer, Vancouver defeated Sherwood Park in the tournament opener by a score of 7-6. Meanwhile, the host team did not fare as well in their opener as Saskatoon would get the mercy win over Red Deer by a score of 15-2.
