GREETINGS FROM THE 2018 18U NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP COMMITTEE

 

We are very excited to welcome Baseball Canada back to Fort McMurray this summer. The details in this package will be updated on a regular basis as more information becomes available. We genuinely appreciate your patience and understanding as we refine some of the details and work towards this event in August. Once again, we are very pleased to be your hosts for this year’s 2018 18U National Championship!

 

ABOUT FORT MCMURRAY

Fort McMurray is located in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB). The RMWB is a collection of several communities, of which Fort McMurray is the urban centre. Fort McMurray offers a wide range of services, including hotels, restaurants, department stores and more. The majority of the retail and restaurant opportunities are located in the downtown core, where you will find:

  • Peter Pond Shopping Mall (location of SportChek)
  • Tim Hortons
  • Starbucks
  • MacDonald’s
  • Wendy’s
  • A&W
  • Canadian Tire
  • Wal-Mart
  • Multiple restaurants & cafés

Fort McMurray also hosts tourist attractions, including the Oil Sands Discovery Centre where you can learn about the history of the oil sands as well as the extraction process. Marine Park, located in downtown Fort McMurray, showcases the river history of the region, including the barges used for transportation of goods through the communities located along the rivers.

 

ABOUT THE VENUE

The two venues for the 2018 18U National Championship are:

  • Baseball Stadium at Shell Place, MacDonald Island Park
  • Ross Hennigar Ball Park, located in the Thickwood neighbourhood of Fort McMurray

The Baseball Stadium at Shell Place is located at MacDonald Island Park, Canada’s largest recreation centre which features a full service facility including the Miskanaw Golf Club and Suncor Community Leisure Centre. Located in the Suncor Community Leisure Centre are several amenities, including the Syncrude Aquatic Centre, fitness centre, indoor running track, two indoor field houses, indoor climbing wall, squash and racquetball courts, and more. The Baseball Stadium at Shell Place includes locker rooms for the athletes. Each player, coach & manager will be provided with two complimentary day passes to MacDonald Island Park on behalf of the 2018 Host Committee.

Ross Hennigar Ball Park is home of the Fort McMurray Minor Baseball Associate and is located in Thickwood, a residential neighbourhood in Fort McMurray.

WELCOME EVENT

The Welcome Reception and BBQ will take place on Wednesday, August 15 at Shell Place. The evening will begin at 6:00 pm and includes a BBQ dinner and live entertainment. The Welcome Reception is complimentary for players, coaches and managers. Additional tickets for this event are available for parents and families who wish to attend at a cost of $35 + GST per person. Tickets for the Welcome Reception can be purchased by calling the Shell Place Box Office at 780-793-6969.

Additional tickets must be purchased before August 10, 2018.

 

PRE-TOURNAMENT MEETING

The pre-tournament meeting will take place on August 15 at 8:00pm in Grand Ballroom A at Shell Place.

 

TEAM PHOTOGRAPHY

Team Photography will take place prior to the Welcome Reception and BBQ on Wednesday, August 15 in the Baseball Stadium at Shell Place, MacDonald Island Park. All teams are required to wear their uniforms for their team photography session. Team photos may be pre-ordered online at order.onewolf.ca using the code: “FMB2018”. The deadline for pre-ordering photos is Tuesday, August 22nd and all orders will be delivered to Team Manager. Any questions about pre-ordering, please contact info@onewolf.ca

 

OPENING & CLOSING CEREMONIES

The Opening Ceremony will take place on Thursday, August 16 at 6:00 pm at the Baseball Stadium at Shell Place, MacDonald Island Park.

The Closing Ceremony will take place following the Gold Medal Game, at the Baseball Stadium at Shell Place, MacDonald Island Park

All teams are required to wear their uniforms for the opening & closing ceremonies.

 

PRACTICE OPPORTUNITIES

On behalf of the 2018 Host Committee, we will be offering free use of the indoor batting cages in the Nexen Activity Fieldhouse at the Suncor Community Leisure Centre from August 16 to August 19.

Teams will be limited to 2 (two), thirty minute bookings per day and bookings shall not be booked consecutively.

In addition to the indoor batting cages, each team will have one 90 minute field practice session at one of the two event venues, Baseball Stadium at Shell Place and Ross Hennigar Ball Park.

The available field practice times are as follows:

  • 10:00 am to 11:30 am
  • 11:30 am to 1:00 pm
  • 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm
  • 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm
  • 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm

Team Managers may book the practice opportunities on a first come first serve basis through the Sport Services Supervisor, Heather Bourgeois at heather.bourgeois@rrcwb.ca or 780-791-0070 ext. 5096.

 

TRANSPORTATION

Team transportation is provided by Diversified and will depart one hour and twenty minutes prior to game time from the host hotels to the venues. It will return immediately following the games. If unforeseen changes are needed due to weather, schedule changes, etc., the Host Organizing Committee will make all necessary arrangements. If Team Managers are needing to request a change due to team meals, practice times, etc., we ask you give 24 hours’ notice to the Director of Transportation, Dave Hutchinson at daveh@dtl.ca or to Committee Co-Chair , Michael Marousek at michael.marousek@rrcwb.ca. Our transportation providers will do their best to accommodate requests within the 24 hour period as well.

 

ACCOMODATIONS

Our 2018 Host Organizing Committee has teamed up with Fort McMurray Hotel Group for the 18U National Championship event.

Teams are asked to contact a Fort McMurray Hotel Group Reservations Agent by phone at 1-866-650-3678 or by contacting the hotel directly. All teams have seven rooms currently reserved from August 15 to August 21. The seven rooms will be paid for by the Host Organizing Committee. Should a team arrive on August 14 or requires one additional room, the room will be at their own expense at time of reservation.

Teams will still be required to sign a group conduct policy upon arrival and provide a valid non-prepaid credit card at check in to cover any incidentals that may be incurred.

 

ACCOMODATIONS, FAMILY & FRIENDS

Family and friends can benefit from a preferred rate available at the three host hotels.

MEALS

The responsibility of meals rests with each individual team. A list of conveniently located restaurants and food services will be provided upon arrival to the Host Venue.

 

MEDICAL SERVICES

The Baseball Stadium at Shell Place and Ross Hennigar Ball Park will have first aid certified staff on site at all times for the duration of the tournament.  

Clearwater Physical Therapy aims to be the primary provider for the tournament’s health and wellness needs.  A Physical Therapist owned practice providing some of the most advanced, hands-on care in the Fort McMurray area since 2003.  Their exceptional team of Physical Therapists and health care professionals are committed to understanding your individual needs while providing you with a quality health care experience. 

  The services they can provide include:

Clearwater Physical Therapy will be blocking off treatment slots for athletes participating in the 2018 Baseball 18U National Championship presented by Pepsi between the hours of 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. from August 16 – 19. Physical Therapist will be available free of charge for participating athletes. If services are required outside of these hours we will work with the athletes, parents, and coaching staff but waiting times may occur. To arrange an appointment please call 780-742-0005 ext. 2.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Umpires have been assigned to the Franklin Suite Hotel | www.franklinfortmcmurray.com

Umpires have eight rooms currently reserved from August 15 to August 21. Accommodations are based on double occupancy and will be paid for by the Host Organizing Committee. Room listing must be provided ten days in advance to the Host Organizing Committee.

Umpires will still be required to provide a valid non-prepaid credit card at check in to cover any incidentals that may be incurred.

Baseball Canada and 2018 18U National Championship-themed merchandise will be available for purchase. Teams, coaches, parents and other participants will have an advance opportunity to purchase these items at the Welcome Reception and BBQ on Wednesday, August 15.

SUITE PASSES

The Baseball Stadium at Shell Place is equipped with a number of private suites for guests to experience the tournament away from the crowds. Baseball Suites have exceptional views of the stadium and include event tickets, VIP entrance and outdoor patio. Premium catering services available to order. Suite capacity is a maximum of 25 guests per suite.

Suite passes for the duration of the Baseball Canada 18U National Championships are $1,750 + Applicable Fees & Taxes and come with 25 lanyards for the full tournament.
