This Year in Baseball: PEI

This Year in Baseball is a regular feature on Baseball.ca that will preview the year ahead in baseball from the 10 Provincial organizations. As we move across the nation from West to East, we take an in-depth look at Baseball PEI.

With a wet spring, baseball in Prince Edward Island has only been underway for a few weeks while most other parts of Canada are well into their seasons.

For young players, the Rally Cap program offers a great way to learn the basics of baseball, while competing in a fun and active environment.

“Rally Cap has all of the same associations using it this year that were last year,” said Glen Flood, Executive Director of Baseball PEI. “Some new associations have come on board this year and we’re working hard to get others in the province to use it.”

Flood, who has spent just over one year in his new post also says that the Winterball program is a welcome addition to many school’s on the island.

“The Winterball program was well received by the PEI schools that took part in the program this year,” he said. “Like any school, they certainly appreciate the new equipment that they can utilize when they implement the program and the feedback has been positive.”

Flood’s first year on the job has seen him go through a steep learning curve, as he also assumes the same role with the Provincial Wrestling and Football organizations.

“The first year has been a learning curve for me in the role as ED,” explained Flood.  “As a MSED (multi-sport executive director), it’s a challenge to balance the Sport groups needs and demands. As far as baseball is concerned, the challenge would be a customizing myself with scheduling and and promoting our game at the grassroots level."

Baseball PEI Technical Director, Desi Doyle is again handling the high performance teams for the province. With the late start to the season, it has been difficult for the teams to get out on to the field to begin preparing for National Championships. That hasn’t slowed down Doyle though, who already has his team selected for the Baseball Canada Cup.

“The Canada Cup team has been selected and will consist of 19 players, including two overage players and one bantam aged player,” said Doyle. “The coaching staff is preparing the team by holding weekly workouts and also participating in the Kings County Intermediate Baseball League.”

A busy schedule has been set-up for this team in advance of the Baseball Canada Cup which gets underway on August 10th in Moncton, NB.

“The team will take part in a pair of tournaments in Halifax against Junior teams,” added Doyle. “We’ll also entertain the Dartmouth Juniors for a three game exhibition series in early July.”

Baseball PEI will also be putting their hosting hat on this summer as both the Bantam and Midget AAA Atlantic championships will be held on the island.

Since baseball weather has made its way out east, look for a great summer of baseball in PEI.
