Another great

OTTAWA- Baseball Nova Scotia is a leader when it comes to promoting girls baseball in Canada. Once again, the annual ‘Girls Day in Baseball’ in Nova Scotia was a fantastic event that brought young girls together to work on fundamental baseball skills and celebrate girl’s baseball.

“We had another great turnout this year,” said Holly Lapierre, Chair of Baseball Canada’s Girls Baseball Committee. “We had girls from all across the province- as far as Cape Breton, which we’ve never had before.

One girl did travel a little bit further than her fellow camp participants, making her way to Bedford (where Girls Day in Baseball took place) from Newfoundland.

“This was a great opportunity for her,” explained Lapierre, “since she doesn’t get to play against girls at home.”

Players were split into groups and rotated around the park where different stations were set-up with a specific baseball skill emphasized.

The list of instructors at the camp was once again top notch and included Stephen Benjamin along with Brad Lawlor (Executive Director of Baseball Nova Scotia), both of whom are on the staff of the provincial Bantam Girls team. A special ‘guest instructor’ whose name is familiar to Canadian baseball fans was also in Bedford to share his expertise with the girls.

Former Blue Jay and World Series champion, Duane Ward made the trip to Nova Scotia to lend a hand with the young female baseball players. Ward was in Nova Scotia to instruct at the Honda Blue Jays Super Camp and arrived a day early to attend Girls Day in Baseball.

“Last year we had former Blue Jay and Canadian, Rob Ducey,” noted Lapierre. “We feel very fortunate that these former major-leaguers are making the trip out east to help make the day extra special for these girls.”

The young female players in Nova Scotia also have some great role models to look up to that are in their own backyard.

“The Bantam Girls (Provincial team) players are great role models for these young girls,” explained Lapierre. “These girls just returned from the Bantam Girls National Championships with a Bronze Medal and some of the players are former participants of this camp.”

From the success that Girls Day in Baseball has brought to Nova Scotia and the strength of the Bantam Girls and Senior Women Provincial teams, it is safe to say that “Girls Baseball Lives in Nova Scotia!”
