Kellogg dominant as Juniors blank Antilles

Cartagena, Colombia- Ryan Kellogg (Whitby, ON) threw seven, no-hit innings as the Junior National Team shutout the Netherlands Antilles 2-0. Kellogg was perfect through six innings and had one-out in the seventh before an error at second base gave the Antilles their first runner of the game.

“It crept in to my mind a little bit,” said Kellogg about the possibility of a perfect game. “I just threw strikes and if they got a hit it didn’t matter because the win was more important.”

“My defence played well behind me,” continued Kellogg. “They communicated well out there which really helped me along.”

Kellogg pitched seven innings and struck out five batters along the way without giving up any walks.

“We needed that coming after two off-days,” said Head Coach, Greg Hamilton of Kellogg’s performance. “We knew our hitters timing would be a bit off, so Ryan’s outing was exactly what we needed today.”

Jacob Robson led-off the bottom of the first with a double, which stood as the only hit of the ballgame until the fifth inning.

In the fifth the Juniors loaded the bases and Robson came through with a sacrifice fly to score Justin Marra (Toronto, ON) from third base. Marra had led the inning off with a single and advanced to third base after a walk and fielder’s choice.

Brett Siddall (Windsor, ON) followed with a single to right field and Daniel Pinero (Toronto, ON) scored to make it 2-0.

Siddall has been on fire for the JNT as he’s 7-for-12 in the tournament with four RBI.

“Brett’s been a huge addition to this team,” explained Hamilton. “He’s hitting in the 2-hole, getting on base and driving people in. He’s been around everything we’ve done offensively so far.”

Dayton Dawe (London, ON) came on for the eighth inning and recorded a strikeout with runners on first and second to keep the Antilles off the scoreboard.

Jake Hansen (Fort Macleod, AB) earned the save with a perfect ninth inning.

“We did just enough on offence to win today,” added Hamilton. “We know as the tournament goes on we have to be better.”

“Some days you just have to get it done and you have to win. Today was one of those days and we came through.”

Canada’s record now sits at a perfect 3-0 which puts them in a tie for first place in Group A with Venezuela who also sits at 3-0. The two undefeated teams will meet in a showdown for first place on Wednesday.

“Obviously we’ll have to play a lot better than we did today,” noted Hamilton. “We’ll be smart with our off-day tomorrow and hopefully come out with a big effort against Venezuela.”
