Juniors settle for silver after loss to USA

Cartagena, Colombia-The Junior National Team gave-up seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and the deficit was too much to overcome as they dropped a 12-2 decision to the United States in the final game of the Americas World Junior Qualification Tournament.

The United States walked off with the win in the bottom of the eighth when an RBI single made the score 12-2 and ended the game via the mercy rule.

With an unbeaten record, the United States won the tournament, while Canada placed second followed by Venezuela and Panama. All four countries qualified for next year’s IBAF World Junior Baseball Championship in Seoul, South Korea.

Canada scored once in the top of the first inning on a Brendan Hendriks (Cochrane, AB) RBI ground out, but the lead was short-lived. Starter Jesen Dygestile-Therrien (Montréal, QC) didn’t last through the first inning, giving up a single and three walks which led to two runs. Therrien left the game with the bases loaded and Adam Anderson (Georgetown, ON) gave-up a grand slam to the first batter he faced to make the score 6-1.

Anderson gave up two more runs in the second, courtesy of a two-run double and the Americans led 9-1.

Cal Quantrill (Port Hope, ON) entered the game in the third and provided his team with four solid innings on the mound that saw him give up only one run on two hits, while striking out two.

In the sixth, Brett Siddall (Windsor, ON) belted a solo homerun over the wall in right field to score his teams second run of the game.

After tossing a scoreless seventh inning and with the score 10-2, Dayton Dawe (London, ON) allowed four consecutive, two-out singles in the eighth which scored two runs for the Americans to give them the win.

After the game, First baseman Daniel Pinero (Toronto, ON) and Left-fielder Brett Siddall were named to the tournaments All-Star team.

Players, coaches and staff will return home tomorrow.

The Junior National Team will next assemble in March 2012 in St.Petersburg, FL for the team’s annual Spring Training trip.
