Canada comes out on wrong end of another close game in Québec City

QUÉBEC CITY – Canada went head to head with the Saguenay Voyageurs on day two of the Québec City Midget Tournament. Canada held the lead until the top of the 6th inning, but ended up losing their 3rd game by a score of 4-2.

Jessica Bérubé (Québec, QC) started on the mound for Canada in her hometown of Québec City. Bérubé was consistent during her 5 innings of work allowing only 1 run on 3 hits and ending the day with an ERA of 1.40. Her 4 strikeouts in the game bring her to a tie for 2nd among tournament leaders.

The Women’s National Team faced Samuel Tremblay who started for the Voyageurs. Tremblay tossed a complete game limiting Canada to 6 hits and adding a tournament leading 5 strikeouts to his tally. 2 runs were scored and 4 walks were allowed during his winning performance.

Melissa Armstrong (Saskatoon, SK) was handed the loss after entering the game as a reliever in the 6th. Armstrong allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and 4 walks. Right-handed pitcher Heidi Northcott (Rocky Mountain House, AB) also saw some action. Northcott allowed 1 run on 2 hits in the 7th inning.

Stephanie Savoie (La Pocatière, QC) and Jenna Flannigan (Cornwall, ON) drove in Canada’s 2 runs in the bottom of the third to give their team the lead.

Saguenay took control of the game in the top of the 6th thanks to a 2-run inning. The team had 7 hits in the game.

Nicole Luchanski (Edmonton, AB) extended her tournament hit streak to 3 games with a single in the 3rd inning. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th, Luchanski represented the tying run at the plate, but struck out swinging to end the game.

The Women’s National Team is now 0-3 in the tournament.
