Canada Games Baseball: Playoff match-ups set

 

SHERBROOKE, QC-BC will meet New Brunswick in one semi final, while Ontario will await the winner of Alberta and Saskatchewan in the other semi as round-robin action concluded today at the Canada Games in Sherbrooke.

Playoff games will take place on Thursday after an off-day tomorrow.

New Brunswick put the finishing touches on their perfect record through round robin play today, while BC proved that they belong in first place in Pool A with a convincing win.

Here’s a recap of today’s action:

New Brunswick 4 PEI 3

New Brunswick rallied with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to beat PEI 4-3 and remain undefeated. Bailey Huber’s (Moncton, NB) two-run single tied the score in the sixth and Huber later scored the go ahead run on a single from Blake Gallager (Waasis, NB). PEI’s Brady Arsenault (Summerside, PE) did all he could on the mound tossing six innings without giving up an earned run and struck out five. New Brunswick’s Leeam Young (Miramichi, NB) and Jake Cook (Miramichi, NB) combined to limit PEI to only four hits.

Saskatchewan 11 Newfoundland & Labrador 1

Erik Climenhaga (Saskatoon, SK) tossed six innings and struck out six, while his teammates accounted for 11 hits and 11 runs as Saskatchewan defeated Newfoundland and Labrador 11-1 in a six inning, mercy-rule game. Leading 5-1 after five innings, Saskatchewan struck for six runs in the sixth highlighted by a Brayden Resch (Saskatoon, SK) two-run double. Kade Erickson (Regina, SK) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Geordie McDougall (Lumsden, SK) went 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Nova Scotia 10 PEI 8

Nova Scotia built a seven run lead and held off a late PEI rally to earn a 10-8 win over their Atlantic counterparts. Nova Scotia scored four times in the fourth as Nick Barrett (Dartmouth, NS) and Kyle Johnston (Hantsport, NS) picked up RBI singles. Nova Scotia had 16 hits with Barrett, Colan McCulloch (Kennetcook, NS) and Colton Beach (Kennetcook, NS) picking up three each. PEI’s Willem Slauenwhite (Cornwall, PEI) was 3-for-4 with a run scored.

BC 10 Alberta 0

BC put the finishing touches on a 5-1 record in Pool A with a 10-0 shutout win over Alberta. Kristjan Storrie (Langley, BC) tossed five innings and gave-up only two hits, while Anthony Cusati (Burnaby, BC) belted a three-run homer as part of a five-run fourth inning. 

Québec 6 Ontario 4

Québec broke open a 3-3 tie with three runs in the fourth to beat Ontario 6-4. Ontario had tied the score in the top of the fourth on a two-run double off the bat of Mark Sinclair (Dundas, ON) only to see Abraham Toro-Hernandez (Greenfield Park, QC) connect on a single that scored to put Québec in front for good. Louis-Philippe Pelletier (Montréal, QC) went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI and Hugo Brochu (Montréal, QC) was credited with the win.

New Brunswick 11 Manitoba 10

New Brunswick scored five runs in the fifth and held off a late surge from Manitoba to win 11-10 and finish first place in Pool B with a perfect 5-0 record. A total of nine errors were committed in the game and both teams recorded seven hits apiece. New Brunswick’s Luc Hebert (Moncton, NB) tossed 5 1/3 innings and struck out eight, while only giving up two earned runs. Manitoba’s Brett Harrison (Winnipeg, MB) had two doubles and an RBI, while Ryan Bartley (Moncton, NB) had a two-run double for New Brunswick.
