Canada in first day of competition at Québec City Midget Tournament

QUÉBEC CITY – The Women’s National Team took on the Lachine A’s and the Lévis Monarques to kick off competition at the Québec City Midget Tournament today. Canada ended the day with a 0-2 record as they prepare for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games in Ajax.

 

GAME 1

Canada dropped their first game 4-1 to Lachine. Starting pitcher Vanessa Riopel (Repentigny, QC) gave up 3 runs on 4 hits through 2.2 innings of work to end the outing with a 7.87 ERA.

Thomas McAdams started the game for the A’s allowing 1 run over 3.2 innings despite walking 4 batters. Relief pitcher Andy Guevara took over in the 4th inning and went on to throw 3.1 shutout innings.

Canada mustered 3 hits against Lachine’s pitching, two of which were off leadoff hitter Nicole Luchanski’s bat. Luchanski (Edmonton, AB) went 2 for 4 in the game and drove in the team’s only run.

Claire Eccles (Surrey, BC) and Kate Psota (Burlington, ON) both took the mound for Canada as relievers. Eccles pitched 2.1 innings allowing 1 run on 3 hits and 2 walks. Psota entered the game in the 6th and tossed 2 perfect innings with one strikeout.

The A’s run production was a collective effort. The team put together 7 hits in the game including 2 doubles for a team batting average of .250.

 

GAME 2

The Women’s National Team was edged out by a score of 7-3 despite showing signs of a late game comeback. Lévis managed to come out on top thanks to a strong offensive outing.

Right-handed pitcher Autumn Mills (London, ON) started on the mound for Canada lasting 3 innings and giving up 4 runs on 8 hits. The Team Canada veteran struck out 4 batters before ending the outing with a 9.33 ERA.

Daniella Matteucci (Fruitvale, BC) took over for Mills to start the 4th giving up 3 runs on 3 hits and 1 walk in 2 innings. Amanda Asay then tossed 1 shutout inning in the 6th striking out 1 and allowing 1 hit.

The starting pitcher for the Monarques Jonathan Landry shutout Canada over  5 innings of one-hit baseball before being replaced by Vincent Laberge. 3 runs came in during Laberge’s only inning of work. Philippe Parent entered the game in the 6th and allowed 2 hits to close the game.

Jenna Flannigan (Cornwall, ON) was very effective at the plate ending the game with a .750 OBP thanks to her 2 hits and 1 walk. The team put together a total of 6 hits, including a Nicole Luchanski double.

The Monarques put together 12 hits, including 1 double for an impressive team batting average of .429.
