First baseman Justin Morneau (New Westminster, B.C) of the Colorado Rockies has been added to the National League list of nominees for this year’s All-Star Game at Target Field in Minneapolis. Manager Mike Matheney and Major League Baseball announced the NL All-Star selections Sunday night, and presented five nominees for the final spot. Morneau’s competition will come from second basemen Anthony Rendon (Nationals), first baseman Anthony Rizzo (Cubs), third baseman Casey McGehee (Marlins) and left fielder Justin Upton (Braves).
Morneau once again established himself as one of the league’s top offensive force this year, posting a very respectable .314 average with 13 home runs and 59 RBI. If Morneau was to clinch this year’s final roster spot, it would be a special homecoming for the 33-year-old veteran and former MVP who spent a decade in Minnesota as a member of the Twins. A four time All-star, Morneau is no stranger to the festivities, having most noticeably won the Home Run Derby back in 2008.
