Competition in full swing at Baseball Canada Championships

OTTAWA – Some of the top young Canadian ballplayers are taking the field throughout Canada today as five National Championships get underway in 4 different cities. Teams are playing their first games today and are looking to end Day 1 with a comfortable spot atop their tournament’s standings.

Here’s a look at some of the results from day 1 as the action unfolds:

13U National Western Championship

Burnaby edged out Saskatoon in a close game to kick off competition at the event. Oildome then topped Sherwood Park by a score of 6-3 in the second game of the day before the Opening Ceremonies.

16U Girls Invitational

Play was delayed due to rain to start the event, but Ontario went on to top Manitoba by a score of 9-3 in the opening game of the tournament at Parc Saint-Philippe. Québec 2 is now set to take on BC at Stade Arvide as competition continues.

18U Championship

8 games have been played so far in Magog, Sherbrooke and Coaticook. New Brunswick defeat PEI 4-3 and Saskatchewan bested Nova Scotia 3-2 in the two opening games. Manitoba’s pitching staff held Newfoundland hitless in their 10-0 win that took 5 innings. Newfoundland then redeemed themselves by defeating Nova Scotia 6-3 later on in the day. Both Québec teams won their games on home soil. Team Québec beat Ontario in 6 innings by a score of 12-2 and the Ailes du Québec won their game 4-2 against Alberta

21U Championship

Team Manitoba put together 10 hits in their 9-1 win over Kentville in the opening game. Ontario 2 limited Dartmouth to 1 hit in their 4-0 victory. Québec scored 4 runs in the 7th to top Kamloops by a score of 8-1.

Senior Women Invitational

Play was also slightly delayed at the Senior Women Invitational. Québec’s 21U team lost the opening game of the tournament against Ontario in Saguenay by a score of 17-3. Two more games are scheduled for the day including Québec 1 vs. Ontario 1 at 7:30pm.

 

Players to watch:

Zack Zinck (Bridgewater, NS) struck out 9 over 4 innings in Nova Scotia’s 3-2 win over Saskatchewan at the 18U.

Bennet Dalke (La Salle, MB) drove in 5 runs in Manitoba’s first 2 games at the 18U Championship.

Drew Grady (Kensington, PE) homered in PEI’s 4-3 loss at the 18U Championship.

Vincent Caschera (Sarnia, ON) put one out of the park in Ontario 2’s 4-0 win over Nova Scotia 1 at the 21U Championship.

Ryan Pollard (Brampton, ON) of Ontario 2 struck out 13 in his 1-hitter shutout against Nova Scotia 1 at the 21U Championship.
