Juniors Fall Short in Back-and-Forth Battle with State College Spikes

FREDERICK, Md. — Despite a multi-hit effort and dynamic baserunning from Canadian shortstop Elliot Lascelles (Toronto, ON), the Canadian Junior National Team came up short in a 10–6 loss to the State College Spikes on Wednesday afternoon at Nymeo Field.

Lascelles sparked the Canadian offense with three stolen bases, two runs scored, and a pair of hits, continuing his strong performance during the MLB Draft League Series.

The Canadians got on the board in the second when Finn Hoeschen (North Vancouver, BC) scored on a wild pitch. An inning later, Lascelles again created pressure, stealing his way to third and scoring on an infield single by Easton Kitura (Spruce Grove, AB) to cut the deficit to one.

On the mound, Junior National Team starter Shane Brinham (North Vancouver, BC) battled through the first three frames, striking out six while allowing three runs on four hits and two walks.

In the fifth, Canada rallied again. Lascelles reached on an error, followed by three consecutive singles from Justin Rompré (Sainte-Anne-De-La-Pérade, QC), Tim Piasentin (Coquitlam, BC), and pinch-hitter Robert Omidi (Mississauga, ON). Hoeschen added a sacrifice fly to make it 6–4.

After the Spikes extended their lead in the sixth, Evan York (Waterloo, ON) delivered a highlight moment—crushing a solo homer to center field for his first hit in a Team Canada uniform, pulling the Juniors back within striking distance.

Canada would add one more in the bottom of the ninth to reach our final score.

The Juniors will be back under the lights tomorrow as they face the Frederick Keys to close out the two-game miniseries.

BOXSCORE

(Evan York, Shane Brinham, Elliot Lascelles)
