Martin officially a Yankee

OTTAWA- Russell Martin (Chelsea, QC) has signed with the New York Yankees as a free agent. Martin became a free agent when he couldn’t come to terms with the Los Angeles Dodgers, a team that drafted him in the 17th round in 2002.

Martin is a veteran of five major league season and hit .248 with 5 homeruns and 26 RBI in 2010 before his season was cut short due to a hip injury. Martin’s finest big-league season came in 2007 where he hit .293 with 19 homers and 87 RBI.

The two-time National league All-Star has represented Canada as a member of both the Junior and Senior National teams. Martin was the starting catcher for Canada at the 2009 World Baseball Classic.

Earlier this week, Matt Stairs (Fredericton, NB) signed a minor league contract with an invite to spring training with the Washington Nationals. Stairs returns to the organization that he began his big-league career with when they were the Montréal Expos. A veteran of eighteen major league seasons, Stairs holds the major league record for most pinch-hit homeruns. Stairs most recent appearance in a Canadian uniform came at the 2009 World Baseball Classic in Toronto. Also returning to the team that drafted him is Rich Harden (Victoria, BC) who reportedly inked a free agent deal with the Oakland Athletics. The deal is still pending Harden passing a physical.
