OTTAWA-Rain reared its ugly head at the 21U Baseball Canada National Championship in Dartmouth, NS causing the postponement of all games on day two of competition. Organizers are working to reschedule games and will post at baseball.ca/21U.
The other three Baseball Canada National Championships taking place are all underway. Here is a summary of early games played will a full recap to be posted later.
18U
BC 12 Nova Scotia 2
BC continues to win and win big through three games as they easily defeated Nova Scotia 12-2 getting a 3-for-3 performance from Chen Bogart (Chilliwack) with two RBI and two runs scored. It only took five innings for the game to finish as BC scored four in the first, three in the second, another four in the third before adding a run in the fourth. Braiden McCready (Richmond) recorded the win on the mound after working three innings with four strikeouts.
Québec (2) 5 Ontario 2
Cyprien Dussenne (Montréal) tossed for solid innings, while Gabriel Cote (Jonquiere) and Vincent Ruel (Québec City) were strong in relief as Québec (2) topped Ontario 5-2. The three pitchers combined on a three-hitter and James Grondin (Sherbrooke) went 3-for-3 with two RBI.
PEI 8 Newfoundland & Labrador 6
Kevin MacLeod’s (Peakes) one-out double in the bottom of the sixth scored two runs to break a 6-6 tie as PEI went on to record an 8-6 win over Newfoundland and Labrador. After Newfoundland and Labrador came out of the gate with six runs through the first two innings, PEI’s Matt Barlow (Summerside) provided his team with six innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. Brandon Jackson (Paradise) went 3-for-4 with one RBI for Newfoundland and Labrador.
Québec 3 Alberta 2
Québec jumped out to a three-run lead and held on from a late charge to defeat Alberta 3-2. Hugo Brochu (Montréal) tossed four scoreless innings before giving up a pair of runs in the fifth, and Tristan Page (Ste-Julie) came in to earn the save with two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief. Benjamin Pelletier (Varennes) went 2-for-3 and scored a run for Québec, while Mat Brisson (St. Albert) drove in both Alberta runs.
New Brunswick 1 Manitoba 0
A pitcher’s duel between New Brunswick’s Blake Gallagher (Waasis) and Manitoba’s Branden Hatley (Morden) saw the team from the east coast come out on top with a 1-0 win. The lone run came in the second inning on a RBI groundout from David Murdock (Miramichi). Gallagher went six and one-third scoreless innings, allowed only two hit and struck out 11, while Hatley tossed six innings of three-hit baseball and fanned seven.
13U National Western
Pembina Hills (MB1) 11 Calgary (AB2) 5
Pembina Hills pounded-out 16 hits including three apiece from Matt Boychuk (Oakland), Joey Moffatt (Portage) and Jordan Lussier (Winnipeg) as then went on to an 11-5 victory over Calgary. After Calgary closed the gap to just one run in the top of the fifth, Pembina Hills responded with five runs in the bottom of the innings to take control of the game. Matthew Neufeld (Airdrie) had a pair of hits for Calgary.
Cloverdale (BC1) 8 Regina (SK2) 3
Ryan Beitel (Cloverdale) was strong through three scoreless innings on the mound and Jonathan McGill (Cloverdale) had a 3-for-3 game at the plate to lead Cloverdale to an 8-3 win over Regina. Noah Dube (Cloverdale) tossed two scoreless innings of relief as Cloverdale kept Regina scoreless through five innings.
South Central (Host) 15 Okotoks (AB1) 10
Host South Central scored seven runs in the fourth and added another five in the fifth to come out on top of a 15-10 decision over Okotoks. CJ Lambkin (Reinfeld) doubled in the sixth and collected three RBI, while Shane Campbell (Winnipeg) went 3-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI. South Central’s Lucas Dyck (Reinfeld) gave up two earned runs and struck out five in three and two-thirds innings of work to get the win. Jack Woods (Calgary) and Jason Bouzide (Calgary) had three hits apiece for Okotoks.
Senior Women
Alberta 8 Ontario (2) 1
Kelsey Lalor (Red Deer), Tara Sliwkanich (Fort Saskatchewan) and Melissa Armstrong (Saskatoon, SK) combined on a one-hitter to lead Alberta to an 8-1 win over Ontario (2). Lalor helped her own cause at the plate going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Bradi Wall (Swift Current, SK) helped Alberta’s attack with a 2-for-2 day at the plate, while Rayna Miller (Calgary) drove in one run as part of a 2-for-4 effort.
