OTTAWA – Québec capped an undefeated week at the 21U Women’s Invitational in St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador with a 13-9 win over BC in the championship contest to claim the gold medal.
The gold medal for Québec is their third in the five year history of the event and first since 2018.
Québec jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one inning and led 13-4 after four in yet another dominant offensive performance where they scored 60 runs in just six tournament games.
Océane Lambert, Jenny Bouthillier, Clara Dupont and Eleonore Deblois had two hits apiece for Québec while star player Alizée Gélinas knocked in three runs as part of 11 on the tournament.
Having pitched Québec into the gold medal game with a no-hitter earlier in the day against Saskatchewan where she struck out nine batters, Gélinas hit .368 on the tournament with a 1.012 OPS.
BC made a late charge in the contest pulling to within four runs of the lead before falling short.
Sarah Pengelly had a double and triple while driving in a pair of runs in the loss.
Saskatchewan takes bronze
It took extra innings and a Kaitlin Tarasoff walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth to give Saskatchewan a 3-2 win over Ontario in the bronze medal game.
The medal is Saskatchewan’s first ever at the 21U Women’s event.
Tarasoff also earned the victory on the mound after pitching a scoreless eighth inning in relief.
