Royals Edge JNT in Dominican

SAN PEDRO de MACORIS, DR – Due to the inclement weather of the last few days in the Dominican Republic, the Junior National Team scheduled a 12-inning game with the Kansas City Royals and were neck-and-neck the entire way, but succumbing by a score of 3-2.

It was the Royals who got on the board first in the top of the first against JNT starter Evan Grills (Whitby, ON) when a run was able to score on an error.

The Royals would score again in the third inning when another error to leadoff the frame followed by a double scored the second run of the game.

Grills was the victim of miscues during his three inning outing. He allowed three hits and a walk during his time on the mound and struck out seven.

But the offence got involved in the bottom of the third inning, starting with a leadoff walk to Darren Kolk (Duncan, BC). After stealing second, Kolk came in to score on Wes Darvill’s (Langley, BC) RBI double to cut the lead in half. After advancing to third on an error, Darvill would later score on a wild pitch to tie the game 2-2.

The score would remain that way until the seventh inning when the Royals led off with a double, a sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to third and would later score the eventual winning run on an error.

It was a pitcher’s duel throughout. On the Canadian side, Nicholas Pivetta (Victoria, BC) threw two perfect innings, collecting a pair of strikeouts during his outing.

Ethan Stewart (Campbell River, BC) gave up an unearned run on one hit with two strikeouts in two innings of work.

Steve McKinnon (Duncan, BC) allowed only one hit in his two innings on the bump. He also struck out two batters.

Finally, Evan Rutckyj (Windsor, ON) threw 1-2/3 innings, allowing one hit and a pair of walks while striking out two.

Next up for the JNT is a matchup with the Cleveland Indians in Boca Chica on Monday, May 25 at 11 AM.
