OTTAWA- Canada will open the VIII Women’s Baseball World Cup® 2018 against Hong Kong as the international federation today announced the schedule for the event that will be held at the USSSA Space Coast Complex in Viera, Florida, from August 22-31.
In addition to taking on No. 10 world ranked Hong Kong to open the tournament, No. 2 Canada will face No. 9 Cuba (08/23), No. 1 and five-time defending world champions Japan (08/24), No. 4 Australia and unranked Dominican Republic in Group B action.
Group A will feature No. 3 USA, No. 5 Venezuela, No. 6 Chinese Taipei, No. 7 Korea, No. 8 Netherlands and unranked Puerto Rico.
Following the Opening Round, the top three finishers in each group will meet in the Super Round from August 28-30 before the World Championship Final and bronze medal games are contested on August 31st.
Canada enters the event as the reigning silver medalists and has captured five medals (two silver, three bronze) in seven all-time Women’s Baseball World Cup events.
The Women’s National Team program is currently holding a selection camp for 26 athletes in Montréal to choose the final 20-player roster that will compete in the World Cup. The roster will be revealed on Thursday, July 12th.
