OTTAWA- The Women’s National Team defeated the Cuban National Team by scores of 8-7 and 6-1 before dropping a 10-6 decision to Venezuela at the Triangle Series in Cuba. The event is being used as a tune-up for the Women’s World Cup which will take place August 10th-19th in Edmonton, Alberta.

Canada 8 Cuba 7
Bradi Wall (Swift Current, SK) had the game winning RBI in the top of the 7th as Canada edged Cuba 8-7. Canada received solid pitching performances from starter Kate Psota (Burlington, ON) and Vanessa Riopel (Repentigny, QC), while Jessica Bérubé (Québec City, QC) picked up the win after tossing two innings. Ashley Stephenson (Mississauga, ON) was a major contributor on defence as she made three highlight reel plays on slow rollers at third base.
Offensively, Hannah Martensen (Ottawa, ON) picked-up two RBI and Meagan Cornelssen (Grand-Prairie, AB) went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Canada 6 Cuba 1
Melissa Armstrong (Saskatoon, SK) shut Cuba down for three innings on the mound and Hannah Martensen and Britany Chan (Richmond Hill, ON) pitched well in relief as Canada defeated Cuba 6-1.
Veronika Boyd (Whalley, BC) paced the offence with an RBI double and Kate Psota, Meagan Cornelssen and Stéphanie Savoie (La Pocatiére, QC) each had one RBI.
Venezuela 10 Canada 7
Venezuela scored eight runs in the second inning which was too much for Canada to overcome as they fell 10-6 at Latinoamericano Stadium in Havana.
Stéphanie Savoie stayed hot offensively as she went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Bradi Wall had an RBI double.
Team Canada will play Cuba today at 3pm ET.
Notes: The Women’s National Team has been quite busy off the field as well during their time in Cuba. Off-field activities have included a visit to the Canadian Embassy in Havana where they were joined by the Cuban National Team, a practice session that included Cuban baseball legends Lazaro Valle, Enrique Diaz and Omar Linares. The team also participated in a scavenger hunt in downtown Havana along with a city tour.
