THUNDER BAY, ON – Lucie Anctil (La Pocatière, QC) sent Canada to the Bronze Medal Game after hitting a walk-off grand slam to give the hosts a 10-0 mercy rule win over Venezuela at Port Arthur Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Canadian catcher, who went 0-for-7 with three strikeouts to start the tournament, had a 2-0 count before crushing the ball to deep right field and ending the game in the fifth inning.
Andréanne Leblanc (Mont-Saint-Hilaire, QC), who went 2-for-3, and Alizée Gélinas (Trois-Rivières, QC), who was 1-for-2, each recorded two RBIs in the victory. In her last six at-bats, Leblanc has four hits and has driven in three runs.
Canadian centre-fielder Sena Catterall (Pierrefonds, QC) went 3-for-3 at the dish, scored three times, and made her second diving catch of the tournament. Meanwhile, Jaida Lee (1-0) of St. John’s, Newfoundland, recorded the win for Canada. The 18-year-old pitcher tallied four strikeouts and allowed a hit in five innings of work.
Edmonton natives Madison Willan, who scored two runs, and Cassie Matlock, who scored once, each drove in a run for Canada, which rounded out the scoring for the Red and White.
Mariana Natera (0-1) was the losing pitcher for Venezuela. She allowed nine hits and seven earned runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Before Canada plays for bronze on Saturday, they will meet with Chinese Taipei on Thursday night.
