Women’s Invitational: Ontario remains unbeaten

MONTRÉAL- Ontario is in the driver’s seat heading into the final day of round robin play at the Women’s Invitational Championships.

The defending gold medalists earned a 12-8 win over Alberta to move to 3-0 while the 21U Prospects squad recorded two wins to move into a tie for second place with BC at 2-1.

The top four seeds after Saturday’s games will advance to semi-final contests slated for Sunday morning.

Alberta 13, Ontario (2) 12

In a wild one that saw four lead changes within the first three innings, Alberta held off a late charge from Ontario 2 to come away with a 13-12 victory. A pair of two-run doubles from Madison Willan and Nicole Luchanski highlighted a nine-run third inning where Alberta sent 13 batters to the plate. Julia Jodouin went 3-for-5 and drove in a pair in the loss for Ontario 2.

21U Prospects 12, BC 6

Ellie Jespersen drove in five runs thanks to a three-hit performance that included two doubles to lead the 21U Prospects to a 12-6 win over British Columbia. The prospects built an 8-1 lead after four and scored four in the seventh to hold off a late BC surge. Marika Lyszcyk contributed a 2-for-5 game at the plate and drove in two runs, while Katie Heppner tossed one and two-thirds scoreless innings in relief. Pascal Jalbert led BC with a pair of hits including a double and three RBI.

Ontario 12, Alberta 8

Ontario erased an early one-run deficit with five runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back to record a 12-6 win over Alberta to remain undefeated. Ashley Stephenson and Hannah Martensen paced the offence with two-hit games and one RBI apiece, while Ella Matteucci and Autumn Mills each drove in two runs. Alberta’s Madison Willan drove in three runs.

BC 10, Ontario (2) 4

A six-run sixth inning broke a 4-4 tie and gave BC an eventual 10-4 win over Ontario 2. Amanda Asay’s two run single started the ball rolling for BC in the sixth who got two and one-thirds scoreless innings from Jenn Gilroy on the mound to record the win. Jessie McKay had a two-hit, two RBI game for BC, while Ontario’s Stephanie Ellis went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI in the loss.

21U Prospects 14, Québec 9

The 21U Prospects used a four-run sixth inning to break a 9-9 tie and eventually come way with their second win of the day defeating Québec, 14-9. Emma March kept her strong bat going clubbing a pair of hits including a double and four RBI, while Ellie Jespersen came off the bench to go 3-for-3 with a double and RBI. Québec’s Isabella Denis smacked a pair of doubles and drove in two runs.
