OTTAWA-The Senior Women’s Invitational began yesterday in Spruce Grove, but only two of four scheduled games were completed due to inclement weather. Four provinces (BC, Alberta, Ontario and Québec) and one regional team (Team West) are in Spruce Grove to determine a National Champion.
The championship is also being used to select the Women’s National Team which will play in the IBAF Women’s World Cup in Edmonton August 10th-19th.
Here is a recap of the action from Day 1 & 2:
Alberta 15 West 1
Alberta scored five runs in the first and added nine runs in the second inning as they cruised to a mercy-rule 15-1 victory over Team West. Meagan Cornelssen (Grande Prairie, AB) paced the Alberta offence as she went 2-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI. Alberta also received contributions on offense from Heidi Northcott (Rocky Mountain House, AB) and Melissa Armstrong (Saskatoon, SK) who each singled and drove in two runs. Samantha Ostrom (Calgary, AB) picked up the win on the mound as she struck six during three innings of work. For Team West, Karli Reeve (Yorkton, SK) scored her teams only run, doubled and stole a base.
BC 6 Ontario 4
Amanda Asay (Prince George, BC) went 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBIs and Daniella Matteucci (Fruitvale, BC) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs as BC opened the tournament with a 6-4 win over Ontario. Matteucci also pitched a complete game win on the mound as she went seven innings outlasting Ontario’s Britany Chan (Richmond Hill, ON) who tossed 3 2/3 innings before Brinley McLaren came on in relief. Jenna Flannigan (Cornwall, ON) led the Ontario offence with three hits, including a double, and two RBIs.
Québec 14 West 3
Rosie Lyard (Beaupre, QC) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Stéphanie Savoie (La Pocatiére, QC) had a single, double and two RBIs as Québec defeated West 14-3. Québec used four pitchers with Sabrina Periard (Gatineau, QC) picking up the win with two strikeouts in only one inning of work and Gabrielle Demers (Gatineau, QC) logging two scoreless innings of relief. For Team West Karli Reeve kept her hot bat going as she went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and one run scored.
Ontario 6 Alberta 5
Jennifer Gilroy (Mississauga, ON) hit a two run double as part of a three-run fifth inning as Ontario held on to defeat Alberta 6-5. Alberta had jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first and led 4-1 after two before Ontario came back. Bradi Wall (Swift Current, SK) had two singles for Alberta, while Rayna Miller (Calgary, AB) had an RBI double. Miller tossed a complete game on the mound for Alberta in the loss. For Ontario, Hannah Martensen (Ottawa, ON), Kate Psota (Burlington, ON) and Autumn Mills (Toronto, ON) combined for the win. Jenna Flannigan (Cornwall, ON) had three hits and scored a run for Ontario.
BC 10 West 0
Amanda Asay singled, doubled and drove in two runs as BC blanked Team West 10-0. Faythe Lou (Surrey, BC) scored three runs as BC jumped in front 3-0 in the first and added another five runs in the second to take a commanding lead. Starting pitcher Stacy Fournier (Langley, BC) didn’t allow a hit in two innings of work as she earned the win.
Québec 14 Alberta 4
Stéphanie Savoie (Québec, QC) was a one-woman wrecking crew as she went 5-for-5 with a solo home run, double, three singles and three RBIs as Québec beat Alberta 14-4. Savoie crushed a two-out, solo home run to right-centre field in the bottom of the first that travelled an estimated 340 feet. Rosie Lyard (Beaupre, QC) also had a big night at the plate as she went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Jessica Bérubé (Charlesbourg, QC) struck out eight Alberta batters in just four innings of work to record the win. Alberta’s Nicole Luchanski (Edmonton, AB) was 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI.
Savoie’s round-tripper was only the second home run in the history of the Senior Women Invitational. In 2008, Ontario’s Ashley Stephenson slugged a home run when the event was held in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
Notes: Action continues on Friday with four games scheduled and concludes on Saturday where medal and placement games will be played.
