2009 National Championships: Midget Championship underway

OTTAWA – Now entering week two of the 2009 Baseball Canada National Championships, the Midget National Championship got underway in Fredericton, New Brunswick and there have already been some thrilling finishes and high scoring contests.

In the opening game of the day, Nova Scotia jumped out to a 5-0 lead over Ontario (Tecumseh) in the third inning, but just held on in the end to a 6-5 win. David McIntyre (Bedford, NS) threw six-plus solid inning, allowing only two earned runs on five hits.

He gave way to Justin Davies (Hammonds Plains, NS) with runners on second and third with no outs in the seventh, clinging to a 6-4 lead. Joel Pierce (Windsor, ON) hit a sacrifice fly to bring in a run, but Davies would then strikeout the next two batters he faced to end the game.

A trio of Québec pitchers struck out 13 hitters as Québec came back from a 4-1 deficit to top British Columbia 9-5. William Sebastien (Gatineau, QC) got the start and struck out eight in four innings of work. Pierre-Olivier Roy (Beauport, QC) and Charles St-Hilaire (Laval, QC) hit solo home runs for Québec while Jim Barbour (Victoria, BC) led B.C. with a two-run double in the first and a single in the third.

Ontario (London) and Saskatchewan were entangled in a 2-1 tilt entering the bottom of the fourth, when London sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 12 runs to put the game away, winning 14-1 via the mercy rule. Ryan Zimmer (London, ON) allowed one run on five hits to earn the win, while he also went 2-for-2 at the plate.
