OTTAWA – Teams are jockeying for position at the Baseball Canada National Championships. In Toronto, three teams have guaranteed themselves a shot at a medal, while the other three championships teams are starting to pull away.
After day one at the Bantam Girls Championship in Toronto, both Ontario and Québec advanced in the winner’s pool with 2-0 records, while Alberta and British Columbia battled it out this morning to see who would get that third spot in the winner’s pool.
It was no contest after the third inning as British Columbia added to their 3-0 lead by scoring six runs in the third on their way to a 9-0 win. Katie Wallace (Nanaimo, BC) hit a two-run single to break the game open in the inning.
At the Bantam Boys Championship in Vaughan, Ontario, Québec and Ontario are leading the way 4-0 records. Ontario then improved their record to 5-0 this morning with a 16-0 win over Saskatchewan.
Adam Anderson (Georgetown, ON) was one of the offensive leaders, going 2-for-3 with a double, four RBI and three runs scored. Dayton Dawe (London, ON) was 1-for-1 with a pair of walks, three RBI and three runs scored and Andris Rizquez (Hamilton, ON) also contributed with three RBI, going 1-for-3 with double.
At the Senior Men’s Championship in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Québec is ahead in Pool B with a 3-1 mark. Their latest victory came at the hands of Ontario by a score of 3-2 in extra innings.
Thomas Grubb (Wheatley, ON) helped put the game into extras when he hit a two-run blast to tie the game 2-2, but Québec would score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to take the game.
In Pool A Nova Scotia is the front runner at the moment by a half game over Alberta after Nova Scotia defeated New Brunswick (Fredericton) 10-9 in extra innings just moments ago.
At the Peewee Western Championship in Red Deer, Alberta, Vancouver and Cloverdale are leading the charge with 2-0 records, while Saskatoon, Sherwood Park and North Winnipeg are vying for the two other spots in the semis. Saskatoon and Sherwood Park both took steps forward this morning. Saskatoon defeated Brandon 11-1, while Sherwood Park took care of Regina 10-6.
