Canada Games Baseball gets underway

CHARLOTTETOWN – Week two of the 2009 Canada Summer Games is underway, which means baseball is on the slate in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

In the opening game of the tournament, Manitoba completely shutdown Saskatchewan, holding them to only four hits as they would go on to win by a score of 9-0.

Manitoba was helped by a four run fifth inning to put the game out of reach. Andrew Lochhead (Reston, MB) drove in the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. Cody Hunter (Winnipeg, MB) reached on an error, which allowed another run to count, then Scott Peters (Altona, MB) hit a two-run single to bring in the third and fourth runs.

Hunter drove in three runs for Manitoba, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Peters and Lochhead each drove in a pair of runs as well.

Paul Thompson (Pierson, MB) threw a complete game to earn the win. He walked a pair and struck out three Saskatchewan hitters.

In other action, Ontario opened their title defence with a shutout win over New Brunswick by a score of 5-0, while Alberta defeated British Columbia 4-1.
