"El Diario": Junior National Team Dominican Summer League Camp

JUAN DOLIO, Dominican Republic – From May 11 to May 23 the Junior National Team program will play a 16 game tour over 12 days facing 15 different MLB professional academies in the Dominican Republic.

MAY 21 | JNT 3, DSL Phillies 5

The Junior National Team program out-hit the Philadelphia Phillies DSL seven to six, but it wasn't enough in a 5-3 loss on Saturday morning in the last match up of the 2022 Dominican Republic Professional Academy Camp. 

Parker Burgess (Douro-Dummer, ON) led things off on the mound for the Juniors working three plus innings, allowing three runs on two hits while striking out three batters. Reece Usselman (Langley, BC) took over in the top of the fifth inning, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out five over four innings of work. 

Cameron Chee-Aloy (Toronto, ON) collected a pair of hits including a double in five at bats to lead the Junior's offence. Hugh Pinkney (Toronto, ON) was busy in the base paths collecting a hit in two at bats with a pair of walks. Josh Jones (Blainville, QC) collected a hit in two at bats driving in a run for his club and recieving a free pass. Deiten Lachance (Sherbrook, QC) had a good day at the dish going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Sam White (Aurora, ON) also collected a hit in four at bats and recieved a free pass. 

Despite the Juniors racking up seven hits and twelve walks, the offence only managed to score three runs and it wasnt enough to come up top of the Phillies in a tight match up to close out the camp. 

MAY 20 | JNT 3, DSL Giants 6

The Junior National Team out-hit the San Francisco Giants DSL six to four, but it wasn't enough in a 6-3 loss on Friday morning in the first game of doubleheader action.

Carson Latimer (Delta, BC) was the starting pitcher on the mound for the Juniors. The right hander went three and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs, none of them earned, on two hits and striking out three. Zak Szabo (Whitby, ON) worked two innings and allowed three runs on two hits while issuing a pair of walks and a pair of strikeouts. Kaleb Thomas (Hagersville, ON) was the next man out of the bullpen for the Juniors, throwing two scoreless innings to close this one out. 

The Junior's offence racked up six hits and nine walks. Dylan O'Rae (Sarnia, ON) had a perfect day at the dish going 2-for-2 driving in and scoring a run for his club while collecting a pair of free passes. Max Hartman (St. Albert, AB) also had himself a day at the plate, collecting three hits in four at bats. Sam White (Aurora, ON) contributed to the Junior's offence with an RBI single in three at bats. Charles-Olivier Cyr (Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC) went 1-for-2 with a triple and a run scored. 

MAY 20 | JNT 1, DSL Yankees 3

The Junior National Team program watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 3-1 loss to New York Yankees DSL on Friday. The Yankees took the lead on a two-run home run in the second inning. The pitching was strong for the Juniors sitting down seven Yankees while allowing only five hits. 

Felix Morin (Quebec City, QC) started for the Juniors and had a solid outing of five hits and three runs, striking out three over five innings. Carson Lumley (London, ON) came in relief and had an spectacular three innings allowing no hits, no runs and no walks while sriking out four. 

Max Hartman (Okotoks, AB) led the Juniors with a pair of hits over four at bats, driving in the only run for his squad in this well pitched match up. Cameron Chee-Aloy (Toronto, ON) collected the only extra base hit for the Juniors in the top of the ninth with a one out double. Hugh Pinkney (Toronto, ON) and Detien Lachance (Sherbrooke, QC) both collected a hit in four at bats and two at bats respectively.  

MAY 19 | JNT 5, DSL Red Sox 12

Nothing came easy for the Junior National Team program on Thursday, as they fell 12-5 to the Boston Red Sox DSL squad.  

Elliot Cadieux-Lanoue (St. Pie, QC) was the starting pitcher for the Juniors going four strong innings of only two hits and one earned run, striking out seven batters. Matteo Pare (LaSalle, ON) came in relief working three innings and allowing five runs in eight hits while striking out four. 

Dylan O'Rae (Sarnia, ON) sparked the Juniors offence at the top of the lineup collecting a hit in three at bats and scoring a pair of runs. Hugh Pinkney (Toronto, ON) also collected a hit in three at bats while driving in two runs for his club. Ty Hamilton (Orleans, ON) is officially on a streak, collecting a pair of hits, including a double, in four at bats and scoring a run to help the Junior's cause. Detien Lachance (Sherbrooke, QC) smashed an RBI single in four at bats that temporarily tied the actions at three in the top of the fourth. Max Hartman (Okotoks, AB) also collected an extra base hit in four at bats while driving in a run for his squad.  

Despite the strong offensive show the Juniors committed four errors and allowed ten hits that led the Red Sox to pull away late in the game.

MAY 18 | JNT 1, DSL Royals 7

The Junior National Team program struggled to put runs on the board on the second game of the doubleheader action on Wednesday. The Juniors had a tough time defensively containing the Kansas City Royals DSL and wasn't able to overcome the early seven run deficit resulting in a 7-1 final.

Chase Marshall (Surrey, BC)  toed the rubber for the Juniors working four innings, allowing five runs on three hits and striking out four. Ty Hamilton (Orleans, ON) threw a scoreless inning in relief to help the Juniors stop the bleeding. Ryan Heppner (Point Roberts Washington, WA) came in to close the actions out of the bullpen tossing three innings, permitting two runs, none of them earned, in three hits while striking out two. 

Dylan O'Rae (Sarnia, ON) continues to do his part at the top of the lineup for the Juniors offence, collecting a hit in three at bats a free pass and scoring the only run for his club. Sam White (Aurora, ON), Detien Lachance (Sherbrooke, QC), and Max Hartman (Okotoks, AB) all managed to collect a hit in four at bats. 

MAY 18 | JNT 3, DSL Cardinals 4

A walk-off left the Juniors on the wrong end of a 4-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals DSL on the first game of the doubleheader on Wednesday morning. 

The Junior National Team got on the board in the first on a Myles Naylor (Mississauga, ON) ground ball error that scored Dylan O'Rae (Sarnia, ON). The Juniors quickly lost the lead in the bottom of the second after an error and a couple of walks lead to a 3 run triple against the Junior's starter.

Jérémy Pilon (Vallyfield, QC) worked five strong innings allowing only four hits and four walks, striking out ten. Nick Frers (North Vancouver, BC) came in relief to close out the actions working three and a third innings of three hits and one walk, striking out four. Despite being walked-off by the Cardinals the Junior's pitchers were tagged with no earned runs in this heart stopper match up.

Ty Hamilton (Orleans, ON) ended the day 1-for-3 with a triple, a walk and a run scored. Josh Jones (Blainville, QC) had an RBI single in four at bats to score Hamilton and shorten the lead to a 3-2 deficit against the Cardinals. Cameron Chee-Aloy (Toronto, ON) collected a pair of doubles in four at bats including the clutch RBI smash that tied the actions to three at piece in the top of the 8th for the Juniors. 

MAY 17 | JNT 9, DSL Dodgers 7

The Junior National Team's offence was on fire in this high scoring match up against the Los Angeles Dodgers DSL, racking up ten hits and nine walks for a 9-7 win.

Myles Naylor (Mississauga, ON) drove in the first run of the game to kickstart the Juniors offence in the top of the first inning to give his club and early lead. Dylan O'Rae (Sarnia, ON) had himself a day at the dish collecting a single and a triple in three at bats, driving in two and scoring three runs of his own. Sam White (Aurora, ON) was another spark at the top of the lineup for the Juniors going 3-for-4 on the day while driving home three runs. Josh Jones (Blainville, QC) collected the only other extra base hit with a double to lead off the top of the second that later allowed him to score a run on a wild pitch by the Dodgers. 

Liam Adamson (London, ON) was the starting pitcher for the Juniors going five strong innings of only one earned run despite giving up seven hits and only striking out one batter. Keegan O'Hearn (Oshawa, ON) made quick work of his inning in relief needing only eight pitches to finish out his performance. Charles-Olivier Cyr (Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC) threw one and two thirds of an inning and allowed three runs on no hits and seven walks, striking out one batter. Tyrus Hall (Victoria, BC) was the closer for the Juniors putting a stop to the Dodgers hopes of a comeback over an inning of work allowing one earned run and a walk while striking out two.

MAY 16 | JNT 1, DSL Blue Jays 2

The Junior National Team program dropped a nail bitter against the Toronto Blue Jays DSL in the first game of doubleheader action on Monday. This close 2-1 game featured excellent pitching performances from both clubs. 

Reece Usselman (Langley, BC) started the game on the mound for the Juniors allowing six hits and two runs over four and a third innings of work, striking out five in the process. Kaleb Thomas (Hagersville, ON) came in relief in the bottom of the fifth inning with the bases loaded striking out the first hitter he faced and inducing an easy ground ball to bail the Juniors from a big inning. The righthander worked three and two-thirds innings holding the Jays to only three hits and no runs while striking out four. 

Max Hartman (Okotoks, AB), Keegan O'Hearn (Oshawa, ON) and Detien Lachance (Sherbrooke, QC) all collected one hit in four plate apparences. The only offensive blow for the Juniors came in the top of the third inning via a Hugh Pinkney (Toronto, ON) RBI double that scored Cameron Chee-Aloy (Toronto, ON).

MAY 16 | JNT 8, DSL Pirates 7

Offence was the name of the game as the Junior National Team took game two of the doubleheader 8-7 against the Pittsburgh Pirates DSL. 

Detien Lachance (Sherbrooke, QC) came up clutch once more for the Juniors dispatching a three run homerun in the top of the second to give his side a momentary 3-1 lead over the Pirates. Dylan O'Rae (Sarnia, ON) continued to be a spark at the top of the lineup, collecting a pair of hits in four at bats, stealing a base, driving in one and scoring one. Hugh Pinkney (Toronto, ON) continued to hit the ball hard at the plate, collecting a double in four at bats and scoring a run to help the club's offensive effort. Max Hartman (Okotoks, AB) carried his hot bat to game going 1-for-3 with an RBI single and a run scored.

Jack Wheatley (Calgary, AB) had an impressive outing on the mound closing the action for the Juniors with a perfect bottom of the ninth inning.

MAY 15 | JNT 3, DSL Cubs 1

The pitching staff for the Junior National Team program carried Saturday's momentum to the mound limiting the Chicago Cubs DSL squad to only six hits and one run.

Carson Lumley (London, ON) was the first on the mound for the Juniors working three complete innings, allowing no runs on three hits and striking out three. His performance was followed by another scoreless outing by Carson Latimer (Delta, BC) who also went three innings, allowing only one hit and a walk while striking out three. Jack Pineau (Thunder Bay, ON) was the closer for the JNT going three solid innings with four strikeouts, giving up only a hit and a solo homerun that would represent the entire offensive effort for the Cubs. 

Sam White (Aurora, ON) kicked things off for the Juniors on offence in the first inning with an RBI single to give the Juniors the early lead. Myles Naylor (Mississauga, ON) continues his hot streak at the dish going 1-for-2 with a triple and a pair of walks.  Keegan O'Hearn (Oshawa, ON) also collected a hit in three at bats and recieved a free pass. 

MAY 14 | JNT 6, DSL Astros 4

The Junior National Team program goes undefeated in doubleheader action on Saturday. Game two featured well pitched match-up between the JNT and the Houston Astros DSL.

Felix Morin (Quebec City, QC) had an spectacular start on the mound throwing five strong innings of only four hits and no earned runs while striking out 10 batters and only issuing one free pass. The lefthander's performance was followed by another stellar four innings of work by Matteo Pare (LaSalle, ON) who only permitted two hits and a free pass, striking out seven in a zero earned run outing. 

Hugh Pinkney (Toronto, ON) continued his hot streak at the dish in game two of the doubleheader going 2-for-4  with a run scored. Sam White (Aurora, ON) crushed an RBI double in three at bats and scored a run of his own. Myles Naylor (Mississauga, ON) continued to contribute to the Juniors offence in game two collecting an RBI single in four at bats and also scoring a run of his own. 

MAY 14 | JNT 12, DSL Rockies 9 

The Junior National Team stole the late lead in game one of the doubleheader in a 12-9 victory over the Colorado Rockies DSL on Saturday morning. The Juniors trailed 9-6 in the top of the ninth inning when Myles Naylor (Mississauga, ON) smashed a grand slam to left-centre field in the first pitch of the at bat.

Chase Marshall (Surrey, BC) was the first arm out of the bullpen working a total of three innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out three. Ryan Heppner (Point Roberts Washington, WA) came in to close the actions in the seventh and allowed two hits and two runs with three strikeouts in his two innings of work. 

The Juniors offence exploded in game one of the doubleheader collecting a total of nine hits in their 12 run game effort. Detien Lachance (Sherbrooke, QC) collected a pair of hits including a three run shot to bring the Juniors whithin striking distance in the seventh inning. Hugh Pinkney (Toronto, ON) was a spark for the Juniors at the top of the lineup collecting a pair of hits including a double and a pair of RBIs while also scoring a run. Max Hartman (Okotoks, AB) also collected a pair of hits and a double, driving in one and scoring a run in this high scoring affair against the Rockies. 

MAY 13 | JNT 7, DSL Brewers 7

The Junior National Team got off to a hot start in the top of the first inning capped off by a Myles Naylor (Mississauga, ON) 2-RBI double to give the Juniors the early lead in the game. 

Jérémy Pilon ( Vallyfield, QC) started the game on the mound for the JNT putting up five innings of work allowing 6 earned runs in eight hits, striking out five and walking three batters. Nick Frers (North Vancouver, BC) came in out of the bullpen to shut the door on the Brewers offence in the sixth, working a total of four scoreless innings allowing only three hits while striking out six. 

The Juniors completed their comeback in the top of the ninth manufacturing three runs to tie the score at seven at piece. Josh Jones ( Blainville, QC) smashed a two out single to centre field after the Brewers issued a couple of walks to set the stage for the Junior's shortstop. Tyrus Hall (Victoria, BC) reached on an error that allowed Ty Hamilton (Orleans, ON) to score the tying run. 

MAY 12 | JNT 8, DSL Rangers 10

Day two of the Dominican Summer League tour featured doubleheader action where the Junior National Team program faced the Texas Rangers and the Boston Red Sox academies. 

Despite a strong showing from the Junior National Team's offence, it was the DSL Rangers that eventually prevailed 10-8 in the first matchup. The juniors racked up a total of 11 hits . Dylan O'Rae (Sarnia, ON) and Cameron Chee-Aloy (Toronto, ON) were a spark for the juniors both collecting two hits at the top of the lineup. Keegan O'Hearn (Oshawa, ON) came up clutch with a 2-run triple in the top of the third to give the Juniors a 5-4 lead over the Rangers.

MAY 12 | JNT 4, DSL Red Sox 8

The Junior National Team fell to a late comeback by the DSL Red Sox 8-4 on the second game of the doubleheader action Thursday. 

Liam Adamson (London, ON) was the starter on the mound for the Juniors allowing only five hits and one run over five strong innings, striking out one and walking one. Charles-Olivier Cyr (Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC) threw two innings in relief and allowing five runs despite only permitting a pair of hits and striking out two. Carson Latimer (Delta, BC) also threw an inning of relief striking out a pair while issuing three free-passes and allowiong two runs. 

Keegan O'Hearn (Oshawa, ON) and Ty Hamilton (Orleans, ON) each collected one hit to spark the Juniors offence against the Red Sox. Tyrus Hall (Victoria, BC) tore up the base paths collecting two stolen bases and leading the charge defensively for the Junior National Team who didn't commit a single error in game two of the doubleheader.

MAY 11 | JNT 4, DSL Padres 4

In the first game of the tour the Junior National Team faced off with the San Diego Padres Academy. Reece Usselman (Langley, BC) was the pitcher of record turning out 5 innings of work, striking out six, while only allowing two runs. Kaleb Thomas (Hagersville, ON) threw 4 spectacular scoreless innings in relief, allowing only three hits and two walks. 

Sam White (Aurora, ON) had himself a day at the plate collecting two hits in three at bats with a walk and an RBI. Hugh Pinkney (Toronto, ON) smashed an RBI single in the top of the third inning. Dylan O'Rae (Sarnia, ON) had also a notable performance at the dish going 1-for-4 while collecting a double and a walk.
