Juniors Drop First Game of Spring Camp

ORLANDO – The Junior National Team opened their Spring Training Camp schedule against the Houston Astros and held their own until the fifth inning when the Astros broke the game open and never looked back as they would go on to defeat the Canadians 11-0.

The Astros would score three unearned runs in the fifth against Jerome Werniuk (Toronto, ON) after a throwing error with two out gave Houston some new life. Werniuk threw two innings, allowing the three unearned runs on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

The Astros would add two more runs in the sixth and then put the game away with six runs in the eighth.

It was more than enough as the Juniors’ offence amassed four hits coming from four different hitters. Alexandre Béland (Trois-Rivières, QC) got a base hit in his only plate appearance, while Wes Darvill (Langley, BC) went 1-for-2. Mike Washburn (Fredericton, NB) and Kellin Deglan (Langley, BC) collected the other hits.

The story on the mound was Jake Eliopoulos (Newmarket, ON) who got things started on the right foot, going three scoreless innings allowing only one hit and a walk while striking out five.

The Junior National Team’s next Spring contest is on Sunday, April 19 at 10 AM when they take on the Atlanta Braves.
