U18 World Cup Qualifier: Junior National Team falls just short of a comeback in opener

Canada 9-10 Puerto Rico

SAN JOSE DEL CABO, Mexico - The Junior National Team fell just short of the comeback, losing 10-9 to Puerto Rico in extra inning and dropping their first game of the WBSC Americas U-18 Baseball World Cup Qualifier.

Canada’s offence was on fire in the late innings, scoring five runs in the bottom half of the sixth to overcome a four-run deficit. Puerto Rico would eventually regain the lead in the top of the seventh. The Juniors would answer back in the bottom half, tying up the actions at eight a piece and forcing the game to go to extra innings.

Myles Naylor (Mississauga, ON) and Ty Doucette (Dartmouth, NS) gave Canada the early lead in the first with back-to-back doubles that scored the first run of this game. The Junior’s offence would come back to live in the bottom of the sixth inning capped off by a Tyrus Hall (Victoria, BC) 2-RBI Double down the left field line.

Ben Soke (New Maryland, NB), Michael Yusypchuk (Edmonton, AB), Matt Donnison (Niagara Falls, ON) and Matt Brown (Carlisle, ON) all toed the mound for the Juniors in this tight affair, all making their debut in the red and white uniform.

Canada will try to bounce back as they will be taking on Venezuela on Saturday, November 5 (6PM ET) in their second game of the U18 Baseball World Cup Qualifier.
