OTTAWA – The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) has announced that the Women’s Baseball World Cup planned for March in Tijuana, Mexico has been postponed due to ongoing concerns from the Covid-19 pandemic.
A final decision on the playing of the Women’s Baseball World Cup, originally part of the WBSC’s 2020 international baseball calendar, will be made at a later date.
“The WBSC is greatly disappointed for the teams and their athletes regarding this difficult decision,” said WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari in a statement. “The WBSC remains in close contact with the Local Organizing Committee, the concerned National Federations/Teams and the respective authorities to determine the next course of action.”
Canada is coming off a bronze medal win the last time the Women’s Baseball World Cup was staged in 2018 in Viera, Florida. In 2019, Canada earned a bronze medal at the COPABE Pan American Women’s Baseball Championships to earn one of four spots awarded to the Americas for the 2020 Women’s Baseball World Cup.
