National Championships: August 27th recap

OTTAWA-Semi-finals are set for Sunday at the Senior Men and Bantam Boys championships while Gold and Bronze Medal games are finalized for Sunday at the Peewee Western championship.

Senior Men (Miramichi, NB)

*PLEASE NOTE, AT SENIOR MEN CHAMPIONSHIP:BOTH SEMI-FINALS WILL START AT 9AM (AST) BRONZE & GOLD MEDAL GAMES WILL BE PLAYED AT NOON (AST) DUE TO THE THREAT OF INCLEMENT WEATHER.

BC-7 Newfoundland-0 (Quarter-Final)

Steve McCea (Coquitlam, BC) tossed a four-hit shutout as BC advanced to the semi-finals with a 7-0 win over Newfoundland. Mike Elias’ (Delta, BC) RBI single in the first proved to be the winning run and Kevin Atkinson (Langley, BC) added a two-run homer in the sixth. BC will meet host Chatham in the first semi-final.

ON1 Windsor-10 Alberta-0 (Quarter-Final)

Windsor also booked a trip to the semi-finals with a 10-0 mercy-rule win over Alberta. Adam Ellwood (Windsor, ON) broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when he scored from third on a passed ball and Matt Varacalli (LaSalle, ON) contributed a two-run triple. Windsor will now face New Brunswick in the other semi-final.

Manitoba-5 NS2 Halifax-2

Kevin McNeill (Carberry, MB) and Aaron Hildebrandt (Altona, MB) each homered as Manitoba defeated Halifax 5-2. Anthony Friesen (Somerset, MB) went the distance on the mound and fanned five to give Manitoba their first win.

Alberta-5 ON2 Mississauga-4 (9 innings)

Denver Wik (Red Deer, AB) scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to propel Alberta into the quarter-finals with a 5-4 win over Mississauga. Alberta led 4-0 until the seventh when Mississauga scored four runs to tie the game. Andrew Dos Santos (Mississauga, ON) had a single and two RBI’s for Mississauga while Alberta’s Jason Chatwood (Red Deer, AB) had three singles and one RBI.

ON1 Windsor-6 BC-4

Adam Ellwood (Windsor, ON) singled and scored a run as part of a three-run sixth to help Windsor to a 6-4 win over BC. Jared Johnson (Kelowna, BC) hit a solo homer for BC in the seventh.


Newfoundland-4 Alberta-2

Mario Tee (St. John’s, NL) gave Newfoundland the start they needed on the mound as they earned a quarter-final berth with a 4-2 win over Alberta. Newfoundland scored all of their runs in the second inning where Bernard Madden (St. John’s, NL) had an RBI single and scored a run.

Other round-robin scores saw Chatham’s Robbie Murphy (Saint John, NB) toss a no-hitter as his team pounded Manitoba 10-0 in a six inning game and Dartmouth defeat New Brunswick, 13-2, after New Brunswick had already clinched first place in Pool B.

Peewee Western (Nanaimo, BC)

Nanaimo-9 MB2 Winnipeg South-6 (Semi-Final)

Nanaimo built up an early lead and held off a late surge from Winnipeg South to advance to the Gold Medal game with a 9-6 win. Owen Yarocki (Nanaimo, BC) had two singles, a double and one RBI as Nanaimo had a 9-0 lead through six innings. In the seventh, Winnipeg South exploded for six runs before Nanaimo’s Brendon Dumont (Nanaimo, BC) recorded a strikeout to end the game. Austin Pistawka (Winnipeg, MB) had a single and two RBI’s for Winnipeg South who will play for bronze.

BC1 Abbotsford-13 SK1 Saskatoon Braves-8 (Semi-Final)

Abbotsford ensured an all-BC Gold Medal game with a 13-8 win over the Saskatoon Braves. John Lipp (Langley, BC) had three singles and a homerun going 4-for-4 to lead Abbotsford. Saskatoon did not go out quietly as Carter Dahl (Saskatoon, SK) hit a grand-slam in the sixth and Jordan Malainey (Saskatoon, SK) hit his third homerun of the tournament in the seventh. Carter Loewen (Abbotsford, BC) earned the win on the mound after five solid innings pitched.

In placement games Sherwood Park defeated Midwest from Manitoba 7-2 to earn fifth place while Red Deer took seventh place with an 11-2 win over the Saskatoon Blue Jays.

Bantam Boys (Vaughan, ON)

BC-15 New Brunswick-4 (Quarter-Final)

BC booked a date with Alberta in the semi-finals with a 15-4 win over New Brunswick. Alex Hendra-Brown (Victoria, BC) hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Kurt Horne (Sooke, BC) had a single, triple and three RBI’s to lead BC offensively. Clint Taylor (North Delta, BC) pitched five innings and struck out four to record the win.

Vaughan-3 Ontario-1 (Quarter-Final)

Robert Byckowski (Etobicoke, ON) propelled Vaughan into the semi-finals as he earned the win in helping his team to a 3-1 win over Ontario. Byckowski threw five innings and gave-up one run on three hits while striking out eleven batters. Ontario’s Hayden Hodgson (Leamington, ON) had eight strikeouts in five innings in a losing cause. Vaughan will face Québec in the other semi-final game on Sunday.

Nova Scotia-9 New Brunswick-7

Morgan Messenger (Clark’s Harbour, NS) had a double, triple and two RBI’s as Nova Scotia defeated New Brunswick 9-7. Jordan Gomes (Dartmouth, NS) went four innings on the mound a struck out six in recording the victory. Corey Kavanagh (Fredericton, NB) and Mitchell Hazlett (Riverview, NB) each had two hits and two RBI’s for New Brunswick.

Alberta-7 Ontario-3

Alberta clinched first place in Pool A with a 7-3 win over Ontario. Drake Kirkwood (Calgary, AB) had two singles and two RBI’s while teammate Sid Gillies (Calgary, AB) had a single and two RBI’s. Down 2-1 to start the sixth, Alberta scored three times in the inning and added another three runs in the top of the seventh en route to victory.

BC-9 Vaughan-7

Leading 3-1 in the third, BC exploded for six runs and held on for a 9-7 win over Vaughan. Kieran Russell’s (Victoria, BC) single scored two runs to highlight the six-run third. Russell also started and went five innings to earn the win. Vaughan’s Drew Simmons (Woodbridge, ON) hit a three-run, inside the park homer in the sixth.

Manitoba-9 PEI-2

Ben Onyshko (Winnipeg, MB) threw a complete-game and struck out twelve PEI batters during a 9-2 Manitoba win. Luke Horanski (Dugald, MB) had a RBI triple while PEI’s Willem Slauenwhite (Summerside, PEI) hit a two-run homer in the first inning.

In other round-robin games Ontario thumped Newfoundland 12-1 and Saskatchewan handed Québec their first loss, 9-2, although Québec had already clinched first place in Pool B.
