OTTAWA- Nanaimo won the Gold Medal on home soil and Québec captured gold at the Bantam Boys championship, while Hurricane Irene reared her ugly head at the Senior Men championship in New Brunswick as both the Gold and Bronze Medal games were postponed until Monday evening.
Bantam Boys (Vaughan, ON)
Québec-8 Alberta-3 (Gold Medal)
Québec proved that they were the class of the tournament with an 8-3 win over Alberta in the Gold Medal game. Like they have all week, Québec used a balanced attack and received some fine pitching in the championship contest to claim gold. Charles Leblanc (Laval, QC) had a 3-for-4 game, including a double and Louis-Philippe Pelletier (Montréal, QC) came up with a clutch, two-run single in the fourth to give his team a 4-0 lead. Samuel Duquette (St-Jean-sur-Richelieu (QC) allowed only one run during four innings of work to get the win while Tristan Pagé (Ste-Julie, QC) came on in relief and preserved the lead. Alberta’s Carson Wlad (Calgary, AB) had an RBI double in the loss.
BC-8 Vaughan-1 (Bronze Medal)
Alex Hendra-Brown (Victoria, BC) had a triple and two RBI’s as BC took the Bronze Medal with an 8-1 win over Vaughan. BC scored three times in the first and two runs in both the second and third innings to build an insurmountable lead. Colton Wood (Victoria, BC), Evan Badry (Victoria, BC) and Kurt Horne (Sooke, BC) combined to limit Vaughan to one run and six hits.
Québec-9 Vaughan-8 (Semi-Final)
After hitting a lead-off triple in the bottom of the seventh, Cyrus Senior (Kirkland, QC) scored the winning run on a Tomy Blais (Ste-Julie, QC) single to put Québec in the Gold Medal game with a 9-8 victory over Vaughan. In the back and forth game, Vaughan’s Josh Naylor (Mississauga, ON) had a double and two RBI’s while Québec’s Tristan Pagé ((Ste-Julie, QC) had three singles and two RBI’s.
Alberta-3 BC-0 (Semi-Final)
Matthew Lloyd (Okotoks, AB) threw a complete-game shutout as Alberta advanced to the Gold Medal game with a 3-0 win over BC. Jagar Gallant (Airdrie, AB) scored the eventual winning run in the second inning when he hit a lead-off single and later scored on a fielder’s choice. Nicholas Vickers (Calgary, AB) had a single and two RBI’s for Alberta.
In placement games, Nova Scotia thumped Manitoba 19-9 to take ninth place; Saskatchewan pounded Newfoundland 11-1 to claim seventh spot and Ontario handed New Brunswick a 10-3 loss in the fifth place game.
Peewee Western (Nanaimo, BC)
Nanaimo-7 BC1 Abbotsford-0 (Gold Medal)
Host, Nanaimo capped an undefeated week and won the Gold Medal with a 7-0 shutout win over Abbotsford. Jason Burgmann (Nanaimo, BC) tossed a two-hitter and struck out ten to earn the complete-game shutout while Owen Yarocki (Nanaimo, BC) hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning. Burgmann played a hand in his team’s offence as an error off his bat resulted in Nanaimo’s first two runs being scored in the third.
SK1 Saskatoon Braves-6 MB1 Winnipeg South-1 (Bronze Medal)
Zack Demchenko (Saskatoon, SK) turned in a dominant performance on the mound as the Saskatoon Braves won bronze with a 6-1 win over Winnipeg South. Demchenko allowed only one hit and struck out thirteen batters to record the win while Jonathon Duff’s (Regina, SK) double in the fifth scored two runs to put the Braves in front for good.
Senior Men (Miramichi, NB)
BC-4 Chatham-1
Defending champ BC ruined any chance of a Gold Medal by the hometown team as they defeated Chatham 4-1 to reach the championship game. Shawn Schaefer (Pitt Meadows, BC) provided BC with a solid effort on the mound going the complete game and allowing only one run on six hits while striking out six. BC used the long-ball to do most of their damage as Kevin Atkinson (Langley, BC) hit a two-run homer in the fifth and Jon Thomas (Burnaby, BC) did a solo-job in the sixth.
ON1 Windsor-6 New Brunswick-1
Mike Czerwieniec (Hamilton, ON) tossed a complete-game three-hitter as Windsor defeated New Brunswick 6-1 to reach the Gold Medal game. Czerwieniec also fanned five batters while Kristopher Klassen (Leamington, ON), Thomas Grubb (Wheatley, ON) and Andrew Masojc (Tecumseh, ON) each collected two singles and one RBI.
The Gold Medal game between Windsor and BC will be played on Monday at 5pm AST while Bronze Medal game follows at 8pm AST where Chatham will take-on New Brunswick (Fredericton) in an all-New Brunswick showdown.
