Canada Games Baseball: BC and Ontario to meet for gold

SHERBROOKE, QC-Ontario and BC will meet for gold tomorrow night at Amédée Roy Stadium (6pm ET) after both teams were victorious this evening in semi-final games.

The gold medal game will feature a re-match of the 2012 Baseball Canada Cup championship contest where Ontario claimed the top prize.

Alberta will meet New Brunswick in tomorrow’s bronze medal game, while Québec and Saskatchewan will battle it out for fifth place.

BC has had Ontario’s number thus far at the Canada Games defeating them handily 10-0 and 9-0 earlier in the week.

Here’s a look at today’s action.

Ontario 3 Alberta 1

Zach Pop (Brampton, ON) tossed six innings of two-hit baseball and struck out six and Mitch Bigras (Sarnia, ON) came on in the seventh to nail down the save as Ontario defeated Alberta 3-1. Ontario took advantage of an Alberta error and walk in the third inning as a sac-bunt moved the runners over before Colin Robinson’s (Windsor, ON) single cashed in both runners. Alberta got one of the runs back in the fifth to pull within one, but Robinson delivered again in the seventh with a sac-fly to score an insurance run. Matt Lloyd (Okotoks, AB) struck out four and was charged with only one earned run in seven innings pitched for Alberta.

BC 7 New Brunswick 0

Kurtis Horne (Sooke, BC) kept New Brunswick off balance through six innings striking out ten and allowing only two hits and three walks as BC handed advanced to the gold medal game with a 7-0 shutout win. The loss was New Brunswick’s first of the tournament, while BC earned their sixth win of the event. BC scored twice in the top of the first and pounded out 11 hits including a single and double from Keenan Williams (Vancouver, BC) who also scored two runs and drove in one. Ryan Powells (Surrey, BC) contributed two singles and had one RBI.

Manitoba 3 Nova Scotia 0

Ben Onyshko (Winnipeg, MB) was simply dominant in tossing a no-hitter and striking out ten as Manitoba cruised to a 3-0 win over Nova Scotia to claim fifth place. Onyshko hit the first batter of the game and an error later in the inning put another runner on, but was perfect the rest of the way outside of a one-out walk in the fourth inning. Troy Blad (Mitchell, MB) and Skylar Canada (Boissevain, MB) each had RBI singles in the sixth as Manitoba broke a scoreless tie with a three run inning. Nova Scotia’s Jake Lonar (Coldbrook, NS) struck out five in the loss.

Alberta 9 Saskatchewan 2

Alberta struck for five runs with two out in the top of the first and Nick Vickers (Calgary, AB) tossed a complete-game with nine strikeouts as they defeated Saskatchewan 9-2 to advance to the semi-finals. Tanner Kirwir (Sherwood Park, AB) had a two runs single in the top of the first to make it 3-0 and Drake Kirkwood (Calgary, AB) followed with a two-run double to put Alberta up by five. Nolan Bumstead (Calgary, AB) contributed with a single, scored two runs and added two RBI, while Saskatchewan’s Geordie McDougall (Lumsden, SK) had a two-run double in the fourth.

Newfoundland & Labrador 2 PEI 0

In the 9th place game, Matt Murphy (St. John’s, NL) tossed a complete-game shutout allowing only three hits, two walks, while striking out two. After singling, advancing to second on a passed ball and third on a ground out, Brad Porter (Conception Bay South, NL) scored the game’s first run on a passed ball in the fourth and Parker Gulliver (St. John’s , NL) added an insurance run in the fifth on a sac-fly from Porter who had two hits in the game.
