Local association in B.C. Going to Bat for Cancer Research

OTTAWA – Mother’s Day is always a special day and three groups in British Columbia are combining to make the weekend a great day for moms and cancer research. The Canadian Cancer Society, Ball Park Sports, and the Lower Mainland Baseball Association are joining together to help raise funds for cancer research as the LMBA will be using special pink bats in the sixteen scheduled games on May 8th and 9th.

“This weekend is a special time to recognize mothers but we would like to make everyone aware of the importance of cancer research and a strong group response from the LMBA will go a long way towards achieving that goal,” says Don Taylor, Commissioner of the LMBA in a statement.

Merv Sandrel of Ball Park Sports has donated 48 pink coloured wood bats to be used in all LMBA league games for the Mother’s Day weekend. The purpose of the games will be to make a significant donation to the Canadian Cancer Society to support cancer research.

“We are looking forward to the participation of our 32 teams, players’ families and friends and collectively a good response should establish this weekend as an annual event in the LMBA,” adds Taylor.

The Canadian Cancer Society has provided support for the event in the form of donation envelopes, banners, balloons, and a website – www.canadiancancersociety.kintera.org/fvr/goingtobat . The 32 LMBA teams will be collecting donations leading up to the special weekend and special invitations have been extended to mothers, wives, and friends to become involved. Players and teams can set up their own webpage and donations can be made online, by pledge forms, and ballpark collection.

The general public can support this cause by making an online donation by going to www.cancer.ca and directing the donation to Going to Bat for Cancer Research. Online donors can get a tax receipt electronically after making their donation.
