Medal rounds in sight as bantam tournaments play on

OTTAWA – The bantam girls standings are complete and the medal round is set.  Play begins Saturday morning.  The bantam boys still have a few more games to complete Saturday and then some elimination games will take place in the evening.

The following a recap of Friday’s games at both tournaments:

Bantam Boys Tournament

BC 9  Alberta 0

Three BC pitchers combined for the shutout and struck out 11 Alberta players in the process en route to the win.  Lucas Soper (Vancouver, BC) had three hits and three RBI in the game, and fell a home run short of hitting for the cycle.  Alberta’s Peter Hutzal (Calgary, AB) had two hits in a losing cause.

Ontario 13  New Brunswick 8

Ontario built a nine run lead early and managed to hold off a New Brunswick comeback to get the win.  The top of the lineup for Ontario provided most of the offense, combining for five hits, six RBI and six runs scored.  Jade Salmon-Williams was the leadoff hitter, and he scored three runs while hitting a double and triple.

Manitoba 6  Nova Scotia 2

Manitoba trailed for most the first half of the game, but came along during the second half with a four run fifth inning.  They got some help as Nova Scotia committed some errors that allowed Manitoba to take the lead.  Riley Poole (Oak Bluff, MB) had two hits and two runs in the victory.  Mitchell Lyall (Brandon, MB) pitched all seven innings and picked up the win.

Vaughan 14  PEI 4

Vaughan scored 7 runs in the seventh inning to pull away from PEI and pick up the win.  Demi Orimoloye (Orleans, ON) was 2/2 in the game and finished with three RBI while Colin Robinson (Windsor, ON) was a perfect 4/4.  Jordan D. Williams (Vaughan, ON) hit a two run home run.

BC 14  Saskatchewan 0

BC picked up their second shutout victory of the day by demolishing Saskatchewan to the tune of 14-0 over five innings.  Len Nakatsuka (Nanaimo, BC) was a perfect 3/3 with two RBI and three runs scored while starting pitcher Jordan Dray (Surrey, BC) didn’t give up a hit in his five innings of work.

Bantam Girls Championship

Ontario 14  Alberta 4

Ontario scored 14 runs on 15 hits and defeated Alberta in a six inning game.  Leadoff hitter and catcher Victoria Saunders (Toronto, ON) reached base in all five of her plate appearances, scoring twice and adding three RBI.  Hailey Boyd (Port Dover, ON) added three hits and two RBI as well.

Chicago 4  BC 3

Chicago managed to hang on to the victory as BC also came back in the seventh inning.  They scored one run, but Danielle Strejc (Evanston, IL, USA) shut the door and picked up the save.  Brittany McNulla (Litchfield, NH, USA) was the offensive catalyst for her team, finished with three hits and driving in three of her team’s four runs.

Nova Scotia 16  Alberta 11

This game was all about offense, as seen by the score.  Both teams also committed five errors, which helped lead to the many runs.  Teneal Perry (Halifax, NS) and Kelsey Brumm (Dartmouth, NS) each drove in four runs while ten different players scored at least one run.

Québec 15  Newfoundland and Labrador 3

Québec scored early and often to trounce Newfoundland and Labrador.   Eight different players scored runs, including three from both Anne-Sophie Lavallée (Boucherville, QC) and Mathilde Pelletier (Montréal, QC).  Brittany Antle (Grand Falls-Windsor, NL) had two hits in a losing effort.
