THUNDER BAY – The Women’s National Team will take on Mexico, Hong Kong, USA, South Korea and Hong Kong in Thunder Bay from August 8-13 in the IX WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Group A in what will be the first sanctioned international baseball competition for Canada since 2019.
What You Need to Know
The WBSC has moved to a new, two-stage Women’s Baseball World Cup format that will see Group A compete in Thunder Bay while Chinese Taipei, Cuba, France, Japan, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela will compete in Group B in Miyazaki, Japan from September 13-19.
Each group consists of a single round robin, with the top two teams at the completion of the round robin games earning a spot in the Finals that will take place in Thunder Bay in 2024.
In addition, two wild cards will be awarded for the Finals. If Canada finishes Group A in the top-three positions, then both third-place finishers from Groups A and B will advance to the Finals 2024 as wild cards. However, if Canada finishes lower than third place in the Group Stage, then they receive an automatic berth in the Finals as host team, and the final wild card goes to the best third place finisher, according to the following criteria (in order):
Meet Team Canada
Canada’s 20-player roster is led by veterans Canada Kaitlyn Ross, Allison Schroder and Madison Willan who bring previous international competition to their resumes including participation at the 2018 WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup where they helped Canada win a bronze medal.
The trio returned to the national team in 2019 helping Canada win a bronze medal at the WBSC Americas Women’s Baseball World Cup Qualifier along with Sena Catterall, Alexane Fournier and Stacy Fournier who have also been named to the roster.
