WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Preview

THUNDER BAY, ON – The first WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup since 2018, and ninth overall, is set to begin in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, on July 28. This event, which consists of Canada, the United States, Mexico, Venezuela, Japan, and Chinese Taipei, promises to be exciting as it showcases the growth and development of women's baseball on a global stage. Here is a preview of what to expect:

Tournament Format

The Women's Baseball World Cup features a round-robin format, then the medal games will follow. After the teams play each other once, the third and fourth seeds will meet for bronze, and the top two seeds will battle for gold.

Key Teams

  • Canada – World Ranking: 7

Canada has done an excellent job at developing its women's baseball program - and has produced impressive talents who can make a significant impact. Third baseman Zoe Hicks, who was named MVP of the Women's National Team in 2023, is a threat on both sides of the diamond. In last year’s tournament, the Manitoba native hit .667 and scored six runs in nine at-bats.

Canada, looking to claim its first championship, has four bronze and two silver medals on the world stage in eight appearances.

  • Japan – World Ranking: 1

The six-time defending champions consistently field a strong team with a disciplined approach to the game. Their players, both men and women, are known for exceptional skills in pitching and hitting.

In the two tournaments that Japan did not win, they took home silver.

  • United States – World Ranking: 4

Known for its strong baseball program and deep talent pool, the U.S. team is often a top contender. The two-time champions have also captured silver and bronze twice.

Emerging Contenders

The Chinese Taipei, Mexico, and Venezuela have been making strides in women's baseball, and their improved performances in years past suggest they could be strong contenders in this tournament. Although the Chinese Taipei are ranked second globally, they only have one silver medal in eight tournament appearances. Venezuela, who will play in its sixth tournament, has one bronze finish, while Mexico will be debuting at the 2024 WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup.

Venue and Dates

All games will be played at Port Arthur Stadium in Thunder Bay from July 28 to August 3. More tournament details can be found on the official WBSC website.
