OTTAWA – Women’s National Team baseball is back this week as all eyes shift to the Nation’s Capital where the Ottawa Stadium will play host to the Women’s National Team Selection Camp from July 3 to 7.
The five-day camp will feature daily workouts and four inter-squad games with the goal of identifying the 20 athletes that will represent Canada at the IX WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup 2024 Finals in Thunder Bay from July 28 to August 3rd.

Mia Valcke (St. Mary’s, ON) collected three hits in four at bats, as Team Red defeated Team Black 10-4 on Sunday at Ottawa Stadium. Valcke tripled in the second inning, singled in the fourth inning, and then singled again in the sixth inning.
Team Black jumped out to the lead in the top of the second after an error scored two runs, and Madison Willan (Edmonton, AB) grounded out, scoring one run.
Team Black would add one more run in the third after Heather Healey (Paradise, NL) smashed an RBI single.
Team Red flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs on four hits to take a 7-4 lead.
Jaida Lee (St. John’s, NL) led things off on the hill for Team Red. The starting pitcher allowed three hits and three runs (zero earned) over two innings, striking out four and walking two. Raine Padgham (Abbotsford, BC) began the game on the opposing side for Team Black. The right-handed pitcher gave up four hits and two runs over two innings, striking out two and walking two.
Sarah Pengelly (Burnaby, BC), Liz Gilder (Port Moody, BC), and Delika Dumulong (L’Épiphanie, QC) each came on in relief for Team Red and held Team Black scoreless in three straight innings.
Team Red offence collected 15 hits in the ballgame. Leadoff hitter Sena Catterall (Pierrefonds, QC) led the squad with four hits in five at bats. Cassie Matlock (Edmonton, AB) and Justine Marin (L’Assomption, QC) both finish the camp with multi-hit games.
Team Black got their first win of the Women’s National Team Selection Camp with a 3-2 victory over Team Red in a closely contested pitching duel between the two sides.
Alexane Fournier (St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC) set the tone for Team Black early on providing them with four scoreless innings, permitting only a hit and a pair of walks while striking out four.
Ava Greiner (Stettler, AB) collected a pair of clutch hits for Team Black finishing her day 2-for-2 with two RBI’s and a walk. Heather Healey (Paradise, NL) also went 2-for-2 at the plate for Team Black with a run scored, as Greiner and Healey combined for four of the six hits for their squad.
Kaitlyn Ross (Redcliff, AB) continued to swing a hot bat in camp, picking up two of the three hits for Team Red over her three at bats. Mena Florio (Vaughan, ON) kept Team Red in the ballgame through the middle innings, tossing three and a one-third innings in relief and permitting a run on two hits while striking out one.
Team Red makes it two in a row with a 9-6 win over Team Black in the second inter-squad game of the Women’s National Team Selection Camp. Team Black fell just short of a comeback despite outhitting their opponents 10-8.
Andréanne Leblanc (Mont-Saint-Hilaire, QC) continued to swing a hot bat at camp, collecting two RBI’s as she picked up two hits over her three at bats. Emily Baxter (Oakville, ON) and Kaitlyn Ross (Redcliff, AB) were clutch for Team Red, producing four RBI’s at the bottom of the lineup.
Madison Willan (Edmonton, AB) and Alizée Gélinas (Trois-Riviéres, QC) both finished their days with a 2-for-3 performance with a pair of runs scored. Gélinas also drove in a couple of runs joining Sophy Gagne (Sainte-Martine, QC) who also drove in two for Team Black, over her 1-for-2 performance at the plate
Juliette Lajoie (Sainte-Brigitte de Laval, QC) was the starter for Team Red, allowing a pair of earned runs on seven hits and no walks. Tess Sawkins (Victoria, BC) threw one and two-thirds innings of relief for Team Black, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out one.
The first of four intersquad games at the Women’s National Team Selection Camp featured a back-and-forth affair, with Team Red ultimately coming up on top of Team Black, 10-4.
Andréanne Leblanc (Mont-Saint-Hilaire, QC) led Team Red offensively, driving in four runs over a 4-for-5 day at the plate. Mia Valcke (St. Mary’s, ON) was a spark in the middle of the lineup for Team Red, finishing her day 3-for-4 with four runs scored.
Julianna Scott (Spruce Grove, AB) had a good game on both sides of the field for Team Black, driving in two runs over her 1-for-1 performance while throwing two innings in relief of one run, on one hit, a walk, and a strikeout.
Amy Johnson (Saskatoon, SK) threw a pair of scoreless innings late in the game, permitting only a walk and picking up a strikeout for Team Red.
