OTTAWA – The playoff picture is as clear as mud at the Baseball Canada Cup in Kindersley, Saskatchewan going into the final day of preliminary action, while at the Junior Championship in Trois-Rivières, Québec the leaders are starting to pull away.
In the final matchup of the night in Kindersley, Alberta’s Alex Regan (Calgary, AB) allowed one run on two hit and a walk while striking out an impressive 11 batters on route to earning the victory over Saskatchewan 3-1.
With the win, Alberta has settled into a three way tie for first place in Pool B with a 3-1 record with Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia. The latter two teams battle it out on Saturday.
In Pool A action, Brandon Dailey (Brantford, ON) went 3-for-3 with three RBI leading Ontario to a 8-0 victory over New Brunswick. Also, British Columbia put on an offensive display in their 12-2 win over Québec.
Meanwhile, in Trois-Rivières, Team Québec scored early and often and have remained undefeated so far in this tournament with a convincing 14-3 win over Newfoundland.
Gabriel Thibodeau (Laval, QC) went 5-for-5 with three RBI and a pair of doubles to lead the Québec offence.
Québec remains a half game ahead of Ontario (Windsor) in Pool A, who defeated New Brunswick 1-0 to improve to 2-0.
Also, Jonathan Gilbert (St-Georges-de-Beauce, QC) went 2-for-5 with three RBI and teammate Dany Boivin (St-Roch-de-l’Achigan, QC) went 3-for-5 with two RBI in Trois-Rivières’ win over Saskatchewan by a score of 10-1.
And finally, Cory Wood (Kelowna, BC) threw a complete game two-hitter, walking only one and striking out five to earn the victory for British Columbia, who shutout Manitoba 3-0.
