2009 National Championships: extra fun

OTTAWA – It seems that they saved the best for last at the Midget National Championship in Fredericton, New Brunswick as the day one finale went extra innings before a winner was declared.

Saskatchewan held a 9-6 lead over Fredericton in the top of the seventh and was down to their last out, but had the bases loaded. Then the unthinkable happens as a fielding error allowed all three runners to score and tie the game, sending it to extras.

It went to the top of the ninth when Gordon Banks (Fredericton, NB) hit a single to drive in Adam Clark (Saint John, NB), who reached on an error, to bring in the go-ahead run.

Then Troy Price (Saint John, NB), who threw the final four inning, allowing only an unearned run on one hit, got the last three outs and the host team completed the comeback and took the 10-9 win.

Evan Zerff (Regina, SK)who  was a home run short of the cycle, took the loss for Saskatchewan allowing four unearned runs on two hits in four innings on the mound.  Ryan Tulloch (Regina, SK) also contributed offensively by hitting two home runs for Saskatchewan. Shawn Reid (Nasonworth, NB) led the New Brunswick offence by going 3-for-4.

Manitoba scored all their runs in the fourth inning as they went on to crush Alberta in an 11-0 mercy rule win.

Colin Waldner (Altona, MB) gave up only three hits and two walks and struck out seven on his way to earning the five inning complete game victory. Waldner also contributed offensively, hitting a two-run double in the 11-run fourth. Meanwhile, Josh Ginter (Morden, MB) also hit a two-run double in the frame, while Chris Menzies (Morden, MB) hit a two-run triple.

Ontario (Tecumseh) jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and held on for a 7-5 win over New Brunswick.

Travis Bondy (Windsor, ON) went 2-for-4 in the game, including a two-run homer in the first. Pat Lesperance (Windsor, ON) hit a solo-home run in that five-run first inning.

Tecumseh added two runs in the fifth inning with back-to-back RBI doubles from Brody and Casey Power (Belle River, ON). Matt Clark (Woodstock, NB) led the way offensively for New Brunswick, hitting a three-run blast.
