2009 National Championships: shutouts and one-run thrillers

OTTAWA – Ontario handed British Columbia its first loss at the Baseball Canada Cup in Kindersley, Saskatchewan in a 4-3 thriller, while at the Junior Championship in Trois-Rivières, Québec, pitchers were throwing up zeros like they were going out of style.

In their second meeting of at the Cup, B.C. and Ontario were battling it out in a back-and-forth matchup which saw a combined 18 hits, seven errors and 19 men left on base.

B.C. opened the scoring in the top of the fourth when Alex Calbick (Burnaby, BC) hit a one out double and came in to score on a Justin Atkinson (Surrey, BC) RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.

Calbick was at it again in the top of the fifth when he drove in the second run of the game, scoring KP Hlatky (Gibsons, BC) to increase their lead to 2-0.

Ontario answered back in the bottom of inning with a pair of RBI singles from Phil Diedrick (Ajax, ON) and Cameron Mattice (Mississauga, ON) to tie the game 2-2.

Both teams exchanged runs in the sixth inning to make the score 3-3, which stayed that way at the end of seven innings, putting the game into extras where in the bottom of the eighth Troy Black (Mississauga, ON) hit the ball back to B.C. reliever Alex Reid (New Westminster, BC) with runners on first and second. Reid threw the ball away, allowing Scott Wilcox (Burlington, ON) to score the game winning run.

Elsewhere in morning action, Johrn Kaluziak (Brandon, MB) threw six shutout innings, allowing only three hits and struck out seven in Manitoba’s 3-0 win over Newfoundland. Josh Register (Winnipeg, MB) struck out two in an inning of work to get the save. 

Four runs in the top of the seventh inning by Nova Scotia erased a 2-0 Prince Edward Island lead and the Nova Scotians held on for the 4-3 victory.  Also, Québec doubled up New Brunswick 10-5.

In Trois-Rivières, Steven Anthony (Halifax, NS) drove in the only run of the game, while Kenny Long (Sydney, NS) allowed only four hits with four strikeouts in a complete game shutout victory as Nova Scotia defeated Newfoundland 1-0.

Stefan Lono (St, John’s, NL) took the loss, tossing six inning allowing only one run on six hits and a walk while striking out eight Nova Scotia hitters.

In other action, François Lafreniere (St-Bruno, QC) allowed only one hit and struck out six in five innings of work in Québec’s 9-0 beating of New Brunswick.

Also, Kyle Porter (Mississauga, ON) threw a complete game three hitter as Ontario (Mississauga) downed Saskatchewan 6-0.
