OTTAWA-Baseball Canada would like to congratulate the one and only Bob Elliott who will enter the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY on Saturday.
Bob will be presented with the J.G. Taylor Spink Award which honours a baseball writer “for meritorious contributions to baseball writing”.
“On behalf of Baseball Canada I would like to congratulate Bob and his family on this tremendous accomplishment,” said Baseball Canada President Ray Carter. “Bob has been a long-time supporter of Baseball Canada and is second to none when it comes to promoting baseball at all levels in our country.
“We are eternally grateful for all that Bob has done for our organization and wish him continued success in his career.”
Bob, a Kingston, ON native, has been on the Major League Baseball beat since 1979 where he began covering the Montréal Expos for two Ottawa, ON newspapers. In 1987 he took a job with the Toronto Sun and has been covering the Blue Jays ever since.
Even though Bob has a busy schedule at his ‘day job’ covering the Jays, his love and passion of Canadian baseball always shines through.
In 2005, his book ‘The Northern Game’ captured the rich history of baseball in Canada and how he himself fell in love with the sport. His website, the Canadian Baseball Network, has become a go-to source for Canadian baseball fans covering everything from grassroots to players like Joey Votto and Brett Lawrie.
From the young small-town Canadian kid playing Junior College baseball in Iowa to the next Larry Walker tearing up the minor leagues, Bob Elliott has it covered.
Bob was asked at the Baseball Canada National Teams Awards Banquet and Fundraiser in January to name his most memorable baseball game that he’s attended.
One would think for a man who has seen thousands of baseball games, including World Series wins and no-hitters, he would choose something along those lines.
Bob’s response: “When Canada defeated the United States 8-6 at the 2006 World Baseball Classic.”
